  • The Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) is a component of
    the Naval Service
  • Its main function supplying Royal Navy vessels
with food and supplies, as well as repairing
    ships and refuelling.
  • RFA personnel are civilians of the MoD civil
service who wear Merchant Navy-style uniforms and
    rank insignia.
  • RFA vessels are manned predominantly by the
civilians, along with Royal Navy personnel to
perform specialised functions, such as operating
and maintaining helicopters or manning hospital
    facilities.

7
  • Fort Victoria and Fort George combine the
functions of fleet oilers and stores ships.
  • Large and adaptable
  • Equipped with an expansive flight deck, supported
by hangars for three Sea King-sized helicopters.
This class can embark and support both
    anti-submarine helicopters and troop-carrying Sea
King Mk4 helicopters, which can transfer large
amounts of stores to other ships.
  • For dual-purpose replenishment rigs are fitted
amidships, enabling transfer of fuel and stores
    to two ships simultaneously.

8
  • RFA Argus was acquired for the RAF during the
Falklands conflict and converted by Harland and
Wolff, of Belfast, before being accepted into
    service in 1988.
  • Her primary role is to provide specialist
aviation training facilities which is why more
than two thirds of her length is given over to a
flight deck to accommodate any of the Royal
    Navys helicopters.
  • As a logistic ship she can be adapted to
transport large amounts of equipment very quickly
which was exploited during the deployment of
Britains contribution to the UN Protection Force
    in the former Yugoslavia.
  • Argus is also equipped with a hospital complex
including two operating theatres and beds for 96
    casualties.

9
  • RFA Diligences role is to provide forward repair
and maintenance facilities to ships and
submarines operating away from their home ports.
  • The ship is fitted with workshops to cater for a
wide range of repair and maintenance
    requirements.
  • She is also equipped to provide auxiliary
electrical power, fuel, fresh water, and water in
    her forward support role.

HM Coastguard
Safer Lives, Safer Ships, Cleaner Seas.
  • HM Coastguard is an on-call emergency
organisation responsible for the initiation and
co-ordination of all civilian maritime SAR within
the UK Maritime Search and Rescue Region.
  • This includes the mobilisation, organisation and
tasking of adequate resources to respond to
persons either in distress at sea, or to persons
at risk of injury or death on the cliffs or
    shoreline of the United Kingdom.
  • The objectives of HM Coastguard are as follows
  • to respond to people in distress or potential
    distress at sea.
  • to respond in conjunction with the MCA's
Counter-Pollution and Response Branch to reports
of actual or potential threats of maritime
    pollution

amateur mariners, as well as young people in
    schools.

Duties, Excise Duties, and other indirect taxes.
  • It was also responsible for managing the import
and export of goods and services into the UK.
  • HMCE was merged with the Inland Revenue (which
was responsible for the administration and
collection of direct taxes) to form a new
department, HM Revenue and Customs, with effect
    from 18 April 2005.
  • HM Customs and Excise officers guarded the
borders of the United Kingdom from smugglers.
Customs officers have authority throughout the
country, including the powers of entry to
    premises and of arrest.
