County of Pozega-Slavonia
  • Known as Golden Valley under the Roman Empire
  • first established in the beginning of 13th
    century
  • 150-year long Ottoman rule (until 1688), Pozega
    was seat of a sanjak and the most important
    administrative and military centre of Slavonia
  • Economic, cultural and social life booms after
    the end of the Ottoman rule

  • 1705-1711 Jesuits build famous Collegium
    Poseganum, for the grammar shool wich had been
    founded in 1699
  • 1761- Jesuits founded an academy for
    philosophical and theological studies that

    workshops and trading companies

Because of diversity and uniqueness of flora and
fauna of this area, Natural park was recently
nominated for a geopark under UNESCOs protection
(with two other geoparks in Croatia Plitvice
and Velebit)

Municipality of Velika 14 km northern from the
City of Pozega with 6.106 inhabitants. The
economic basis is agriculture, winegrowing and
tourism. Velika is an attractive spa resort with
three open swimming pools (mineral springs at a
temperature of 28C (alleviates rheumatism).
Velika is also a major hiking starting point for
Papuk Town of Kutjevo- with 7.472
inhabitants. It is known by nearly eight hunderd-
year tradition of vinegrowing and producing
quality wines, especially internationally
recognised Riesling- Grasevina, Pinot Gris and
Pinot Blanc, Traminac and Rhineland Riesling.
