• Salem Village had separated from Salem Town,
  creating much animosity
• The clergy was losing power
• Native Americans were attacking
• Land lust was common
• Smallpox epidemic and drought occurred
• Rebellion was viewed as evil

III. Ways Witches were Identified

• Someone saw them sign the Devils book
• They owned small creatures like birds, snakes,
  cats
• They had the Devils mark (wart, mole, birthmark)
• They owned dolls (poppets) that were used as
  voodoo dolls
• Their spirit, or Specter was doing bad deeds
  when they were locked up in jail
• The accusers reacted strongly when the person was
  near
