11 New maths A level criticised
12Dozens of university academics have put their
names to calls for a new maths A-level in England
to be scrapped, BBC Online reports. Educators
for Reform, a think tank offshoot, say use of
mathematics is not of A-level standard. They
argue it will mislead students from poor
backgrounds and will not prepare people for
university study. The Qualifications and
Curriculum Authority said a consultation on the
new course was just ending but it was meant to
supplement existing A-levels.

research into mineral processing at the
University has won an international award. The
project, Microwave Exfoliation of Vermiculite,

leading body of research commercialisation
professionals, UNICO. The awards recognise the
process of turning knowledge and expertise from
research centres into real commercial products
and services that benefit society and the
economy. The Universitys winning entry is a
new and environmentally friendly way of
processing vermiculite, a widely-used mineral,
and it is generating significant market interest.
