Main Ideas and Vocabulary
  • European nations colonize Southeast Asia.
  • Traders make huge profits as they sell Southeast
    Asian goods throughout Europe.
  • Spain, Portugal, British, French, Germany, the
    United States and Dutch are in Southeast Asia.
  • Vietnamese rulers viewed the missionaries from
    France as a threat to their own power.
  • Protectorate- a country that has its own
    government, but whose policies are directed by an
    outside power.

  • Encomienda- a right to demand taxes or labor from
    the people living on the land.
  • Spanish power begins to decline around the world.
  • In the Philippines, catholic religious orders
    were growing.
  • U.S. gets involved in the Philippines.
  • U.S. allows the Filipinos to hold government
    office.
  • Even though the Americans built schools,
    hospitals, and roads, they did very little to
    change the Philippine economy.
