Who Suffers?

• Fragile X is equally present among ethnic and
  racial groups. It is more common among males
  than females. Females are less likely to be
  diagnosed.

Symptoms

• The main symptom is mental retardation. One
  third of children with Fragile X also
  have autism. It can also result in severe
  retardation, especially in males. There are also
  physical symptoms such as elongated face, large
  ears, flat feet and low muscle tone.

The Genes

• The fragile X syndrome is a genetic disorder
  caused by mutation of the FMR1 gene on the X
  chromosome. This mutation causes the X
  chromosome to appear fragile under a microscope.
  It is incompletely dominant, so carriers are
  likely to be partially affected.

Hereditary Pattern

• This is a diagram of the hereditary pattern of
  Fragile X Syndrome. Carriers are 30 likely to
  have some symptoms. Females with the disorder are
  still less effected.

Medical Treatment and Genetic Testing

• Fragile X can be treated through behavioral
  therapy, special education, medication, and when
  necessary, treatment of physical abnormalities.
• There is no cure, but people continue to
  research.
• People with a family history should get genetic
  counseling.

Real Life Story

• Zach, Connor and Taizsia have Fragile X Syndrome.
• Zach and Connor have autism from their Fragile X.
• In school Taizsia is at her grade level in most
  areas and has no language problems.
• All three have severe behavioral problems, such
  as self abuse, ADHD, and unreasonable aggression
  and violence.
