Population subgroups
  • Early 1600s. The Seaflower lands in Old
Providence with Puritan settlers who establish an
English colony. In the 1800s the islands become
part of Colombia but the native islanders are
still defined by Anglo-African roots, English
    mother tongue, and Protestant religious
    background.
  • 1950s. Massive migration from the Colombian
mainland begins with the free port declaration.
These immigrants and their descendants are
defined by Latin roots, Spanish mother tongue,
    and Roman Catholic religious background.
  • 1960s. Growth of a commercial model of tourism
attracts merchants from the middle east who
remain as an economically powerful minority on
    the islands.
