• Has a hard time getting focused/started

Tutor as Helper

• Help students to learn for themselves
• Dont just give them answers
• Suggest (help develop) a course of action
• Guide the sessions
• Be ready to help, but let students do the work!

Tutor as Teacher

• Explain ideas or information that students missed
  in class
• Teach concepts and ideas
• Refer to the text
• Draw diagrams
• Give examples
• Give the student tips
• Encourage/cheer the student on

Tutor as Peer Learner

• You are not experts
• Be honest if you dont know something
• Utilize text books, dictionaries, other tutors,
  and teachers to find answers
• Model this behavior to students
• Teach them how to look for help

Tutoring Tidbits

• Let the student do the writing
• Student should have pencil/pen
• Read papers out-loud
• Catches ones own mistakes
• Produces CONFIDENCE
• Dont criticize teachers or assignments
• Sit in an uncluttered / quiet area

English Peer Tutor

• Slay the biggest dragons firstisolate one or two
  writing issues and focus on those
  (i.e.transitions, mechanics)
• Find something to praise in the students work
  (great intro)
• Avoid writing the students paper
• Reinforce the idea of multiple drafts (Ill look
  at it again for you)
