Generation Gap

We are separated by generations
  • Generation gap is a popular term used to describe
    big differences in older generation people
    between people of a younger generation and their
    elders
  • It occur when older and younger people do not
    understand each other because of their different
    experiences, opinions, habits and behavior

Baby Boomer
  • Baby boomer (1946-1964) born after World War II
  • As of 2008, the term baby boomer is generally
    applied to anyone between the ages of 44 and 63
  • First group to be raised with televisions in the
    home
  • 1950s, people in diverse geographic locations
    could watch the same shows, listen to the same
    news, and laugh at the same jokes.

  • Generation X (1965-1976/83) also known as Baby
    Bust, very commonly used in media and pop
    culture
  • Some studies revealed - a generation of teenagers
    who "sleep together before they are married,
    don't believe in God, dislike the authority, and
    don't respect parents

  • Disaffectation with governance, a lack of trust
    in leadership, particularly institutional
    leadership
  • Rampant political apathy
  • Increase in divorce (institution of marriage)
  • Increase in mothers in the workplace

    were things you took pills not to have")
  • "Devil-child films"
  • Increase in educational variance
  • Decrease in educational funding and loan
    availability
  • Inception of the Internet
  • The end of the Cold War

Generation Y
  • Generation Y (1977/83-1990/97) - primarily
    children of the Baby boomers, though some are
    children of older Gen X adults
  • The later birth after Gen Y also known as
    Millennial.
  • Facebook, MySpace, texting, IM and other instant
    communication technologies may explain
    Millennials' reputation for being peer oriented
    and for seeking instant gratification

  • Reynol Junco and Jeanna Mastrodicasa (2007) found
    that in a survey of 7,705 college students in the
    US
  • 97 own a computer
  • 94 own a cell phone
  • 76 use Instant Messaging.
  • 15 of IM users are logged on 24 hours a day/7
    days a week
  • 34 use websites as their primary source of news
  • 28 author a blog and 44 read blogs
  • 49 download music using peer-to-peer file
    sharing
  • 75 of college students have a Facebook account
  • 60 own some type of portable music and/or video
    device such as an iPod

Generational Unity
  • "Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me,
    O God, till I declare your power to the next
    generation, your might to all who are to come"
    (Psalm 7118 NIV).
  • "One generation shall praise thy works to
    another, and shall declare thy mighty acts"
    (Psalm 1454 KJV).
  • Be reminded that our Father is God of Abraham,
    Isaac and Jacob

Our call
  • Each generation is called to build on the
    foundation left by the previous generation
  • "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to
    wrath but bring them up in the nurture and
    admonition of the Lord" (Ephesians 34 KJV).
  • "Remember the days of old, consider the years of
    many generations ask thy father, and he will
    show thee thy elders, and they will tell thee"
    (Deuteronomy 327 KJV).

The enemy
  • It is satans plan to cause disunity and mistrust
    between generations.
  • His strategy is to kill, steal and destroy us by
    drawing us away from God
  • 2Tim 31-4"But mark this There will be terrible
    times in the last days. People will be lovers of
    themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud,
    abusive, disobedient to their parents,
    ungrateful, unholy, without self-control, brutal,
    not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash,
    conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers
    of God" (NIV).

    before the coming of the great and dreadful day
