6Grants Application Process
- PI identifies funding opportunity either from
resources provided by GC or on their own
downloads instructions and application forms - Applications are assembled at the Dept. either by
PI or DGMS under the oversight of Business
Manager or Dept. Admin. - Once the Application is complete it comes to the
appropriate Grant Manager in GC for final review
7Grants Application Process, cont.
- Grant Manager will review Application to ensure
it meets with Sponsor Guidelines and Institute
policies. Some of the areas we review are
eligibility criteria, applicability of IDC and
fringe rates, biosketches, other support, budget
justification, use of human subjects, animals. - The Grant Manager will forward the Application to
the Director or Assistant Director once it is
acceptable for institutional signature or
electronic submission. Paper applications are
returned to the Dept. for eventual submission to
the Sponsor.

- Fellowships (F) Grants awarded to individual
researchers for developing independent research
projects while completing training that will
advance their careers - Training Grants (T) Enable Institutions to make
Awards to individuals selected by them for
predoctoral and postdoctoral research training - Career Development (K) Supports Ph.D.s and
clinicians who wish to develop a career in
biomedical research. This award provides salary
support up to 75,000 and protected time. A
minimum of 75 of full-time professional effort
must be devoted to research.

- Research Project (R01) Supports discrete
specified project in a specific area of interest
and competencies - Small Research Grants (R03) Small grants
provide flexibility for initiating studies,
generally for preliminary short-term projects and
are non-renewable - Exploratory/development Grants (R21) Supports
the development of new research activities in
categorical program areas (support generally is
restricted in level of support and in time)

- Research Program Projects (P) Supports a
broadly based multidisciplinary, often long term
research with a specific major objective or basic
theme - Cooperative Agreements (U19) Supports a
research program of multiple projects directed
toward a specific major objective. This award
provides support for certain basic shared
resources including clinical components.
Substantial Federal programmatic staff
involvement is intended to assist PIs during
performance activities
12Award Notification
- Institute is notified of intent to make award
- Submits Just-in-time (JIT) to Sponsor i.e.
Other Support, IRB/IACUC approvals, Human
subjects education certification - Institute receives official Notice of Awards,
sends copy to the PI, Dept. Business office and
Research Accounting - Grant Manager will review the terms and
conditions of award, initiate PeopleSoft account
set-up and highlight reporting requirements to
Dept and Research Accounting

- DFCI Grants and Contracts office is responsible

research grants and contracts - Ensure that all Sponsor requirements are met in a

changes to Depts through website, newsletter,
monthly Dept. Administrators meeting - Provide training on new sponsor initiatives and
electronic systems
