United Way
2
Mission
  • To increase the organized capacity of people to
    care for one another.
  • To be as inclusive and effective as possible
  • And to provide the mechanism for efficient
distribution of funds to the services the donor
wants to support and to identify needs and inform
the giving community of those needs

3
Goals and Values
  • To help the public to better understand the
challenges local communities face now and in the
future, and United Ways role in meeting those
    challenges

4
External Analysis
  • Stakeholders
  • 49 partner agencies, volunteers and employees
  • Trends
  • increased need, changing demographics, increased
    involvement
  • Low Government involvement
  • Having difficulties differentiating funding
sources by the company and differentiating
corporate decision compared to local decisions.

5
Internal Analysis
  • They are the largest provider of health and human
services in the country second only to the
    federal government
  • United Ways collectively raised 3.77 billion in
    the 1999-2000 community campaign
  • United Ways intangible resources include its
    structure, brand image, affiliations and
    integrity
  • The United Ways distinctive competency is its
ability to raise vast amounts of money

6
Strategies
  • Generic/Business-
  • Differentiation-It differentiates itself through
    innovation, quality and customer responsiveness.
  • It also uses Focus by focusing solely on the
    needy.
  • Functional-
  • Superior efficiency - relies heavily on marketing
  • 99 Consumer Brand Recognition

7
Strategies (Contd)
  • Global-
  • Multidomestic- hoping to achieve maximum local
    responsiveness.
  • They are in many different countries.
  • Chosen mode of entry is similar to franchising
  • Corporate-
  • Long-term strategic alliances- for example-NFL
host Thanksgiving day half-time show. Use NFL
network time to promote United Way.
  • Most of us familiar with NFL/United Way
    commercials

8
Organizational Structure
  • Their organizational structure is set up as a
multidivisional structure. This stems from the
fact that it has at the top its structure, the
    United Way of America.
  • Below that stems the local chapters. Underneath
those are the agencies that are supported or
brought to life by the local chapters.
  • -1,400 branches
  • New CEO as of August 2001

9
Some Local Charities of the Great Salt Lake Area
  • Boys and Girls Clubs
  • Salvation Army
  • Teen Mothers and Child Program
  • Indian Walk-In Center
  • Boy Scouts of America
  • American Red Cross

10
Control Systems
  • Applications
  • Local affiliates must require agencies that apply
for aid from the United Way to be registered as a
501P3 non-profit organization, and be in the
region of that particular United Way. They must
    reapply every two years
  • Each local chapter must report to United Way of
    America

11
Control Systems (Contd)
  • Information Systems
  • United Way has a database that is accessible to
each United Way that allows them to see the
status of each partner and prevent organizations
from applying to more than one United Way.
  • Fit
  • These control systems and structure help United
Way become effective and again an efficient
    distributor of funds.

12
Change
  • decreased local funding due to streamlining money
    to September 11 funds
  • a low national ranking for Utah, 49th out of 50
  • support of controversial funds
