The Voting Rights Act of 1965
  • It eliminates literacy tests and allowed the
federal government to enroll voters previously
denied the right to vote by local governments.
  • But, although the act was a major victory, it did
not solve the problems of social and economic
    inequalities.

3
1965
  • In this year, civil rights leaders begin to drift
apart. New leaders emerge and the movement turns
    North.
  • In the North segregation was by custom (de facto)
whereas in the South it was by law (de jure). De
facto segregation is much harder to fight.
  • The Great Migration of black from the South to
    Northern industrial cities intensified during
    WWII.
  • Most whites in the years following WWII moved
from the cities to the new suburbs. This became
    known as white flight.
  • When Dr. King marched on Chicago in 1966 to draw
attention to the de facto segregation there he
was met with angry white resistance.
  • The march was a failure.

4
Violence in Northern Cities
  • July 1964 Race riot in Harlem, a black
neighborhood in New York City began following a
clash between white police and African-American
    teens. A 15 year-old student was killed.
  • August 1965 Race riot in Watts, a black
neighborhood in L.A. 34 people were killed
  • July 1967 Race riot in Detroit follows a raid
on an after hours night club. 43 people were
    killed.
