Hurricane Tracks
A Closer Look

2
Parts of Hurricane
  • 1.  ExhaustHot air drawn into the atmosphere.
  • 2.  Storm CloudsSpiral in upper atmosphere.
  • 3.  EyeCool air descends into the 20-mile wide
eye, a low pressure calm center of circulation.
  • 4.  Eye Wall Storm's fiercest winds. Many agree
that the most deadly area of a hurricane is the
    eye wall.
  • 5.  Spiraling WindsIn the hurricane's lower
realms, air flows in toward the center and whirls
    upward.

3
  • What Causes a Hurricanes
  • How long do Hurricanes last?
  • How are Hurricanes named?

4
Classification of Hurricanes
  • Category One Hurricane
  • Wind Speed 74-95 mph (64-82 kt or 119-153 km/hr)
  • Category Two Hurricane
  • Wind Speed 96-110 mph (83-95 kt or 154-177 km/hr)
  • Category Three Hurricane
  • Wind Speed 111-130 mph (96-113 kt or 178-209
    km/hr)
  • Category Four Hurricane
  • Wind Speed 131-155 mph (114-135 kt or 210-249
    km/hr)
  • Category Five Hurricane
  • Wind Speed greater than 155 mph (135 kt or 249
    km/hr)

Tracking of Hurricanes
  • Methods used
  • Remote Sensing data
  • Data collected from Hurricane Hunters
  • Radars

6
My approach using GIS
  • I have used GIS to draw the tracks of Various
    Hurricanes.
  • Acquiring Data
  • National Hurricane Center
  • Data Used
  • 1995-2002

7
Steps Involved
  • Downloading the data into a Microsoft Excel Sheet
  • Sorting the data to fit the GIS formats
  • Getting the World Map

8
  • Importing the Excel sheets into GIS
  • Creating a Shape file
  • Creating a New Geo database
  • Clipping the Part of World where Hurricanes
    Strike
  • Extracting the US Cities struck between
    1995-2002
  • Generating a Time Series
  • Showing the Time series Variation Using Tracking
    Analyst

9
The Highlighted area shows the states that were
struck by Hurricanes during
1995 - 2002

11
Conclusions
  • Possibilities of an area being hit by Hurricanes
  • Is there a Particular Trend

12
  • Places where Hurricanes
  • struck more often within
  • USA between 1995 - 2002

A table showing the States where Hurricanes have
struck mostly in USA between 1995 - 2002
13
Some fields where such Information be used
  • Investments
  • By Finance companies
  • Building purposes
  • Deciding the Economy

14
  • Questions
  • Suggestion.
