  subject of oral health care for people with
  disabilities

Special Care Dentistry - Specialty

• The GDC (UK) agreed in December 2005 to the
  principle of the establishment of a Specialist
  List in Special Care Dentistry (SCD). We
  understand that the Council meeting this month
  will be asked to finalise this decision and hope
  to see a Specialist List in SCD in the latter
  part of this year.

Formal Qualifications in Special Care Dentistry

• Dental Nurses NEBDN (UK)
• post-qualification in Special Care Dental
  Nursing
• Dental Hygienist/Therapist -
• Currently being developed by BSDH
• Dentists Specialist post-graduate training

CPD Requirements for DCPs

• 150 hours CPD in each 5 year cycle
• 50 hours verifiable
• Must include 3 core subject areas
• medical emergencies 10 hours (minimum)
• disinfection decontamination 5 hours
  (minimum)
• radiography radiation protection 5 hours
  (minimum)

• An annual statement of both verifiable general
  CPD hours must be completed. A declaration form
  will be sent to you shortly after the end of each
  year of the cycle.
• After the end of a five year cycle a random
  number of registrants will be selected and asked
  to produce their CPD records, including
  documentary proof of their verifiable CPD, for
  audit.

• All clinical staff should also keep up to date in
• - legal ethical issues
• - handling complaints
• Verifiable CPD must have
• Concise educational aims objectives
• Clear anticipated outcomes
• A quality control system to obtain feedback

Post-Qualification in Special Care Dental Nursing

• Course in place since 2000
• Available in various centres in UK N.I.
• 309 successful candidates to date
