What Is the HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base?

• Developed in 1987
• Cumulative international compilation of data from
  developing countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern
  Europe, Latin America the Caribbean, and
  Oceania
• HIV prevalence
• HIV incidence
• Updated on a yearly basis
• The most complete HIV seroprevalence database in
  the world
• Supported by USAID UNAIDS
• Current size
• 80,000 data records
• over 7,000 publications and presentations

Data Base Content

• Virus type (HIV1, HIV2, HIV12)
• Study sample size
• Seroprevalence rate or incidence rate
• Population studied (Pregnant women, blood donors,
  STI patients, prostitutes, military, truckers,
  etc.)
• Geography location
• Age/sex of respondents
• Sample tested (Blood, Oral, Urine)
• Type of test (ELISA,Rapid,WB,etc.)

• Distribute Data Base updates by CD-ROM
• Provide reports and support
• Develop an Internet Data Base with USAID
• Developing a component within the Data Base which
  would provide the latitude and longitude for
  geographic areas reported in the Data Base
