Title: MESSIANIC PROPHECIES

1
MESSIANIC PROPHECIES
  • EVIDENCE OF INSPIRATION

2
2 Timothy 316
  • All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and
is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
    correction, for instruction in righteousness,
that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly
    equipped for every good work.

3
2 Peter 119-20
  • And so we have the prophetic word confirmed,
which you do well to heed as a light that shines
in a dark place, until the day dawns and the
morning star rises in your hearts knowing this
first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any
private interpretation, for prophecy never came
by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as
they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

4
Introduction
  • The number one reason for accepting the
Scriptures as having been "God-breathed" is
    fulfilled prophecy.
  • The Messiah is the most frequent subject of Old
    Testament prophecy.

5
Matthew 517
  • "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or
the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to
fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven
and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will
by no means pass from the law till all is
    fulfilled."

6
Luke 2444
  • Then He said to them, "These are the words which
I spoke to you while I was still with you, that
all things must be fulfilled which were written
in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the
    Psalms concerning Me."

7
Introduction
  • The number one reason for accepting the
Scriptures as having been "God-breathed" is
    fulfilled prophecy.
  • The Messiah is the most frequent subject of Old
    Testament prophecy.
  • If the Scriptures were fulfilled by Jesus, and
Jesus was sent by God, then we ought to accept
the scriptures as having been "God-breathed."

8
THE SEED OF THE WOMAN
  • So the Lord God said to the serpent "Because you
have done this, You are cursed more than all
cattle, And more than every beast of the field
On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat
dust All the days of your life. And I will put
enmity Between you and the woman, And between
your seed and her Seed He shall bruise your
head, And you shall bruise His heel." (Gen.
    314-15)

9
THE SEED OF THE WOMAN
  • But when the fullness of the time had come, God
sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under
the law, to redeem those who were under the law,
that we might receive the adoption as sons. (Gal.
    44-5)

10
THE SEED OF THE WOMAN
  • He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has
sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the
Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy
the works of the devil. (1 John 38)

11
THE SEED OF THE WOMAN
  • Now a great sign appeared in heaven a woman
clothed with the sun, with the moon under her
feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars.
Then being with child, she cried out in labor and
in pain to give birth. And another sign appeared
in heaven behold, a great, fiery red dragon
having seven heads and ten horns, and seven
diadems on his heads. His tail drew a third of
the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth.

12
THE SEED OF THE WOMAN
  • And the dragon stood before the woman who was
ready to give birth, to devour her Child as soon
as it was born. She bore a male Child who was to
rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her
Child was caught up to God and His throne. Then
the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has
a place prepared by God, that they should feed
her there one thousand two hundred and sixty
    days.

13
THE SEED OF THE WOMAN
  • And war broke out in heaven Michael and his
angels fought with the dragon and the dragon and
his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor
was a place found for them in heaven any longer.
So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of
old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the
whole world he was cast to the earth, and his
angels were cast out with him.

14
THE SEED OF THE WOMAN
  • Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, "Now
salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our
God, and the power of His Christ have come, for
the accuser of our brethren, who accused them
before our God day and night, has been cast down.
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony, and they did
not love their lives to the death.

15
THE SEED OF THE WOMAN
  • Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell
in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and
the sea! For the devil has come down to you,
having great wrath, because he knows that he has
    a short time." (Rev. 121-12)

16
THE SEED OF ABRAHAM
  • Then the Angel of the Lord called to Abraham a
second time out of heaven, and said "... In your
seed all the nations of the earth shall be
blessed, because you have obeyed My voice." (Gen.
    2215-18)

17
THE SEED OF ABRAHAM
  • Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises
made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of
many, but as of one, "And to your Seed," who is
    Christ. (Gal. 316)

18
THE SEED OF ABRAHAM
  • Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of
Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's
elect and the acknowledgment of the truth which
accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life
which God, who cannot lie, promised before time
    began (Titus 11-2)

19
THE SEED OF ABRAHAM
  • Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of
our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with
me in the sufferings for the gospel according to
the power of God, who has saved us and called us
with a holy calling, not according to our works,
but according to His own purpose and grace which
was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began
    (2 Tim. 18-9)

20
THE TRIBE OF JUDAH
  • The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a
lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh
comes And to Him shall be the obedience of the
    people. (Gen. 4910)

21
THE TRIBE OF JUDAH
  • For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah,
of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning
    priesthood. (Heb. 714)

22
HEIR TO THE THRONE OF DAVID
  • "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with
your fathers, I will set up your seed after you,
who will come from your body, and I will
establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for
My name, and I will establish the throne of his
    kingdom forever." (2 Sam. 712-13)

23
HEIR TO THE THRONE OF DAVID
  • The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the
Son of David, the Son of Abraham Abraham begot
Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah
and his brothers. Judah begot Perez and Zerah by
Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram.
Ram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, and
Nahshon begot Salmon. Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab,
Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, and
Jesse begot David the king. David the king begot

24
HEIR TO THE THRONE OF DAVID
  • Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah.
Solomon begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot Abijah,
and Abijah begot Asa. Asa begot Jehoshaphat,
Jehoshaphat begot Joram, and Joram begot Uzziah.
Uzziah begot Jotham, Jotham begot Ahaz, and Ahaz
begot Hezekiah. Hezekiah begot Manasseh, Manasseh
begot Amon, and Amon begot Josiah. Josiah begot
Jeconiah and his brothers about the time they
    were carried away to Babylon.

25
HEIR TO THE THRONE OF DAVID
  • And after they were brought to Babylon, Jeconiah
begot Shealtiel, and Shealtiel begot Zerubbabel.
Zerubbabel begot Abiud, Abiud begot Eliakim, and
Eliakim begot Azor. Azor begot Zadok, Zadok begot
Achim, and Achim begot Eliud. Eliud begot
Eleazar, Eleazar begot Matthan, and Matthan begot
Jacob. And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of
Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called
    Christ.

26
HEIR TO THE THRONE OF DAVID
  • So all the generations from Abraham to David are
fourteen generations, from David until the
captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations,
and from the captivity in Babylon until the
Christ are fourteen generations. (Matt 11-17)

27
HEIR TO THE THRONE OF DAVID
  • Now Jesus Himself began His ministry at about
thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the
son of Joseph, the son of Heli, the son of
Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the
son of Janna, the son of Joseph, the son of
Mattathiah, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum,

28
HEIR TO THE THRONE OF DAVID
  • the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, the son of
Maath, the son of Mattathiah, the son of Semei,
the son of Joseph, the son of Judah, the son of
Joannas, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel,
the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, the son of
Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the
son of Elmodam, the son of Er, the son of Jose,
the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim,

29
HEIR TO THE THRONE OF DAVID
  • the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of
Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the
son of Jonan, the son of Eliakim, the son of
Melea, the son of Menan, the son of Mattathah,
the son of Nathan, the son of David (Luke 323-31)

30
BORN OF A VIRGIN
  • Moreover the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying,
"Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God
ask it either in the depth or in the height
above." But Ahaz said, "I will not ask, nor will
I test the Lord!" Then he said, "Hear now, O
house of David! Is it a small thing for you to
weary men, but will you weary my God also?

31
BORN OF A VIRGIN
  • Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son,
and shall call His name Immanuel. Curds and honey
He shall eat, that He may know to refuse the evil
and choose the good. For before the Child shall
know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the
land that you dread will be forsaken by both her
    kings. (Isaiah 710-16)

32
BORN OF A VIRGIN
  • Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows
After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
before they came together, she was found with
child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her
husband, being a just man, and not wanting to
make her a public example, was minded to put her
away secretly. But while he thought about these
    things,

33
BORN OF A VIRGIN
  • behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a
dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be
afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that
which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall
call His name Jesus, for He will save His people
    from their sins."

34
BORN OF A VIRGIN
  • So all this was done that it might be fulfilled
which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet,
saying "Behold, the virgin shall be with child,
and bear a Son, and they shall call His name
Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."

35
BORN OF A VIRGIN
  • Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the
angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him
his wife, and did not know her till she had
brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called
    His name Jesus. (Matt. 118-25)

36
BORN AT BETHLEHEM
  • "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are
little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of
you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in
Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From
    everlasting." (Micah 52)

37
BORN AT BETHLEHEM
  • Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in
the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from
the East came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is He
who has been born King of the Jews? For we have
seen His star in the East and have come to
worship Him." When Herod the king heard this, he
was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

38
BORN AT BETHLEHEM
  • And when he had gathered all the chief priests
and scribes of the people together, he inquired
of them where the Christ was to be born. So they
said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it
is written by the prophet 'But you, Bethlehem,
in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the
rulers of Judah For out of you shall come a
Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.' "
    (Matt. 21-6)

39
BORN AT BETHLEHEM
  • And it came to pass in those days that a decree
went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world
should be registered. This census first took
place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all
went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

40
BORN AT BETHLEHEM
  • Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city
of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David,
which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the
house and lineage of David, to be registered with
Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.

41
BORN AT BETHLEHEM
  • So it was, that while they were there, the days
were completed for her to be delivered. And she
brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him
in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger,
because there was no room for them in the inn.
    (Luke 21-7)

42
DECLARED THE SON OF GOD
  • "I will declare the decree The Lord has said to
Me, 'You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.'"
    (Psalm 27)

43
DECLARED THE SON OF GOD
  • And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying,
"This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well
    pleased." (Matt. 317)

44
BETRAYED BY A FRIEND
  • Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted,
Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against
    me. (Psalm 419)

45
BETRAYED BY A FRIEND
  • And while He was still speaking, behold, a
multitude and he who was called Judas, one of
the twelve, went before them and drew near to
Jesus to kiss Him. But Jesus said to him, "Judas,
are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
    (Luke 2247-48)

46
SOLD FOR 30 PIECES OF SILVER
  • Then I said to them, "If it is agreeable to you,
give me my wages and if not, refrain." So they
weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver.
    (Zech. 1112)

47
SOLD FOR 30 PIECES OF SILVER
  • Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot,
went to the chief priests and said, "What are you
willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?" And
they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver.
    (Matt. 2614-15)

48
HANDS, FEET AND SIDE PIERCED
  • My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are
You so far from helping Me, And from the words of
My groaning? ... But I am a worm, and no man A
reproach of men, and despised by the people. All
those who see Me ridicule Me They shoot out the
lip, they shake the head, saying, "He trusted in
the Lord, let Him rescue Him Let Him deliver
Him, since He delights in Him!" ( Psalm 221, 6-8)

49
HANDS, FEET AND SIDE PIERCED
  • I am poured out like water, And all My bones are
out of joint My heart is like wax It has melted
within Me. My strength is dried up like a
potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws You
have brought Me to the dust of death. For dogs
have surrounded Me The congregation of the
wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and
    My feet (Psalm 2214-16)

50
HANDS, FEET AND SIDE PIERCED
  • "And I will pour on the house of David and on the
inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and
supplication then they will look on Me whom they
pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one
mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as
one grieves for a firstborn." (Zech. 1210)

51
HANDS, FEET AND SIDE PIERCED
  • Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day,
that the bodies should not remain on the cross on
the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day),
the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be
broken, and that they might be taken away. Then
the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first
and of the other who was crucified with Him. But
when they came to Jesus and saw that He was
already dead, they did not break His legs.

52
HANDS, FEET AND SIDE PIERCED
  • But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a
spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
And he who has seen has testified, and his
testimony is true and he knows that he is
telling the truth, so that you may believe.

53
HANDS, FEET AND SIDE PIERCED
  • For these things were done that the Scripture
should be fulfilled, "Not one of His bones shall
be broken." And again another Scripture says,
"They shall look on Him whom they pierced."
  • Then He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here,
and look at My hands and reach your hand here,
and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving,
    but believing." (John 1931-37 2027)

54
RAISED FROM THE DEAD
  • For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will
You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. (Psalm
    1610)
  • But God will redeem my soul from the power of the
grave, For He shall receive me. Selah (Psalm
    4915)

55
RAISED FROM THE DEAD
  • Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the
week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other
Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was
a great earthquake for an angel of the Lord
descended from heaven, and came and rolled back
the stone from the door, and sat on it. His
countenance was like lightning, and his clothing
as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear
of him, and became like dead men.

56
RAISED FROM THE DEAD
  • But the angel answered and said to the women, "Do
not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who
was crucified. He is not here for He is risen,
as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord
    lay." (Matt. 281-6)

57
RAISED FROM THE DEAD
  • Now when He rose early on the first day of the
week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of
whom He had cast seven demons. (Mark 169)

58
RAISED FROM THE DEAD
  • Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and
thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer
and to rise from the dead the third day, and that
repentance and remission of sins should be
preached in His name to all nations, beginning at
    Jerusalem. (Luke 2446-47)

59
RAISED FROM THE DEAD
  • For I delivered to you first of all that which I
also received that Christ died for our sins
according to the Scriptures, and that He was
buried, and that He rose again the third day
according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen
by Cephas, then by the twelve. (1 Cor. 153-5)

60
RAISED THE THIRD DAY
  • After two days He will revive us On the third
day He will raise us up, That we may live in His
    sight. (Hosea 62)
  • For if we have been united together in the
likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be
in the likeness of His resurrection (Rom. 65)

61
RAISED THE THIRD DAY
  • For the love of Christ compels us, because we
judge thus that if One died for all, then all
died and He died for all, that those who live
should live no longer for themselves, but for Him
who died for them and rose again. (2 Cor. 514-15)

If "all died" all were raised. If not, why not?
62
RAISED THE THIRD DAY
  • Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow
Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish
three days and three nights. (Jonah 117)

63
RAISED THE THIRD DAY
  • For as Jonah was three days and three nights in
the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of
Man be three days and three nights in the heart
    of the earth. (Matt. 1240)

64
WAS JESUS SENT BY GOD?
  • Admittedly, we have not dealt with all of the Old
    Testament's predictions of the Messiah.
  • But Jesus clearly fulfilled many of them.

65
WAS JESUS SENT BY GOD?
  • There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus,
a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by
night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You
are a teacher come from God for no one can do
these signs that You do unless God is with him."
    (John 31-2)

66
WAS JESUS SENT BY GOD?
  • And many of the people believed in Him, and said,
"When the Christ comes, will He do more signs
than these which this Man has done?" (John 731)

67
WAS JESUS SENT BY GOD?
  • Admittedly, we have not dealt with all of the Old
    Testament's predictions of the Messiah.
  • But Jesus clearly fulfilled the bulk of them.
