Title: Intelligent Systems Application Center

1
Intelligent Systems Application Center
  • Brian P. Butz
  • Director

2
The Centers Mission
  • The Intelligent Systems Application Center (ISAC)
    creates software applications and hardware
prototypes that will be used to enhance
    educational delivery.
  • The applications combine interactive multimedia
    and artificial intelligence technologies.
  • Software is evaluated for usability and
    effectiveness.

3
Areas of Focus
  • Engineering and Science Education
  • ITS
  • Virtual Laboratories
  • Virtual Experiences
  • Health Education
  • Cancer Treatment Alternatives
  • Virtual Patients
  • General Education
  • Virtual Teams solving Real Problems

4
Some Projects
  • Interactive Multimedia Intelligent Tutoring
    System (NSF)
  • Universal Virtual Laboratory (NSF)
  • Prostate Interactive Education System (Fox Chase
Cancer Center, NCI, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine,
    PA Dept of Health, DOD)
  • Interactive Virtual Intelligent System for
Scientific Inquiry in a Biology Learning
    Environment (INVISSIBLE) (NSF)

5
Interactive Multimedia Intelligent Tutoring
System (IMITS)
6
IMITS Content
  • Covers a two-semester course in introductory
    electric circuits
  • DC Circuits
  • AC Circuits
  • Transient Analysis
  • Laplace Transforms
  • 80-100 hours of material
  • Eighteen Projects

7
IMITS Scenario
8
What Makes It Different From Other ITSs ?
  • Project Centered
  • Student Controlled
  • Teaches Concepts and Encourages Critical Thinking
  • Extremely Rich in Material
  • Emphasizes Understanding
  • Stresses Communications

9
Effectiveness Study
  • Two major questions guided the evaluation of the
    softwares effectiveness on learning
  • 1) Did students who used IMITS (experimental
condition) learn more (e.g., score higher on
achievement measures) than their counterparts in
    the control condition?
  • 2)Did performance on the IMITS embedded
learning objective questions improve the more the
    software was used?

10
Effectiveness Study
  • Two universities (Rowan and Temple)
  • 127 students R (78), T (49)
  • Results
  • There was support for the effectiveness of IMITS
using classroom measures. For each cohort, the
software group outperformed the control group (at
a statistically significant level) on two
classroom achievement measures Labs 4 and 5
(DC 5 problem) (Cohort 1) Lab 4 and Exam 3
(Cohort 2), and DC assignments 3 and 4 (Cohort
    3).
  • There was very strong evidence that IMITS works
to improve learning engineering concepts in
introductory circuits courses. The more students
used the software, the better they performed.
All things being equal, that is, taking into
account grade point average, race, and school,
for 10 learning objectives, the number of
questions encountered predicted learning gain on
    that objective.

Prostate Interactive Education System(PIES)
12
Specific Aims of PIES
  • To develop a computer-based intelligent system
    that provides patients with up-to-date
information about prostate cancer, its treatment
    options, and its side effects.
  • To evaluate the usability of PIES and to assess
with early-stage prostate cancer patients the
programs effect on prostate cancer knowledge and
    on treatment decision making

INVISSIBLE
  • Develops an innovative curricular approach for
scientific literacy in biology that is driven by
    national standards.
  • Develops an intelligent tutoring system that has
the capacity to (a) create authentic multimedia
    scenarios for self-directed, hands-on learning
and (b) monitor a students performance and
modify pedagogical strategies based on a dynamic
    assessment of the learner.
  • Disseminates results to science and educational
    communities.

19
The Modules
  • Crime Investigation
  • Origins of Man

20
Environments
21
This entry triggers placement of suspects
picture on the whiteboard and also brings
related evidence collected up to that time onto
white board and time line
22
Scientific Reasoning Tool
23
Evidence Gathering and Interpretation Tools
  • Data collection notebook on students virtual PDA
  • Lab submission forms for analysis
  • of evidence in lab (forms located on
    students virtual PDA)
  • Students identification of potential subject
  • puts relevant information on White Board
    and
  • Time Line.

24
Things We Consider
  • Audience
  • Advisory Committee
  • Content
  • Scenario
  • Effectiveness
  • How to Push the Envelope

25
In Conclusion
  • We develop intelligent, interactive, multimedia
    software for educational purposes.
  • We make use of advisory committees, focus groups
    and consultants.
  • We test and evaluate the software.
