Title: Online Room Selection
1Online Room Selection
2Two Main Steps forOnline Room Selection
- Decide where you want to live
- Plan ahead for at least a first, second and third
choice (the more choices, the better) - For example . . .
- 1st choice North Avenue Suite Single
- If they are all taken . . . Do I go for a North
Avenue Suite Double or a Grand Mesa Single? - 2nd choice Grand Mesa Single
- What if they are all taken as well?
- 3rd choice Monument Double

- Choose your roommates, suite-mates or
apartment-mates! - Review the Roommate Selection Guide
- Set up your Roommate Group (if you have one)
prior to your online room selection process . - Make sure everyone in your group has mutually
requested each other so that you have a fully
matched group. - Make sure you all agree on a plan! Which
building, who goes in which room type within the
suite, etc.
3All Room Selection is Online via
MyHousinghttps//housing.mesastate.edu
- Your MyHousing login is the same
- as your Novell/ login.
Password Your initial password is your birthdate
in the form of mmddyy The first time you log
into MAVzone, you will be prompted to change your
password. Your MyHousing password will
automatically change to match your MAVzone
password.
Username Your Novell/MAVZone username is
normally the first letter of your first name
followed by the first seven characters of your
last name. To look up your username, go to the
Campus Directory and use the search
function. Your username is the text in front of
the _at_ in your email address.

This would be your name
This box has yourRoom Selection Lotteries,
including start/end times.
5On the left-hand menu, hover over Room Selection
and then click on My Room Selection Information
On this page, you can view additional details
regarding your Room Selection processes.
6Lottery Times
- Every new, incoming student will be assigned a
lottery time. - Lottery times are assigned based on the date the
housing application, contract and deposit were
received. The earliest complete applications have
the earliest lottery times, separated by 30
minute intervals. - Your lottery time is the earliest time you can
select a room within MyHousing. - You can select your room anytime between your
start time and 500 PM on May 1, 2009, for the
highest priority. - For students who apply after mid-April or for
students who wish to change their assignment, the
online process will run continually from May 11,
2009 until June 30, 2009.
7Remember . . . If you are requesting roommates,
you must have a fully matched roommate group in
order to select a room!
8When your lottery is activated . . . To choose
your room, just go to the menu on the left, hover
over Room Selection and click on Select a
Room/Suite
9Or, if you are eligible for more than one lottery
at the same time, you will need to select the
lottery in which you want to participate. Remembe
r, once you participate in one lottery, you will
be removed from the other lotteries!
10After you choose your selection process, you can
filter your room search. You can be general or
specific, but be careful being too specific you
could end up with an empty search. However, even
if you end up with an empty room search, you can
always search again!
11Here is an example of an available rooms
list. You can either select the room (for just
you or for you and one roommate) or you can
select the suite to place yourself and any
mutually requested roommates.
12Now that you have selected your suite, simply
place each mutually requested roommate into the
rooms of the suite. Make sure you are placing
your friends in the spaces you agreed on!
13Here is the final confirmation screen you will
see once your room selection is complete. As is
written on this screen, you and your roommates
will receive an email confirmation.
14Your new assignment will show up on your
MyHousing overview page immediately.
15Room Changes
If something comes up and you need to change
rooms . . . Please request a room change via
MyHousing. You will automatically forfeit the
room you previously selected upon
submitting. You will be placed in the New
Student Room Change Lottery (May 11 June 30,
2009).
16The list of available rooms you will be shown is
limited to what you and your roommate group (if
applicable) are eligible for . . .
A Few Important Notes!
- If you have a total of four people in your
roommate group, you will only be shown suites
apartments where there are at least four
available spaces - Males will be shown male rooms
- Females will be shown female rooms
- Non-freshman will be shown apartments
- If you feel you should be eligible for a room
typethat you do not see displayed, please call
or email the Housing Office and we will determine
your eligibility (970-248-1536,
housing_at_mesastate.edu)
17Handling Roommates Room Selection Scenarios
- Have a plan A, B and C
- Decide with your roommates what you will do if no
5-person suites are left in North Avenue Hall
(etc). - For example, will you break up into two groups of
three and two and try to get suites near one
another? - During room selection, you can delete or add
roommate requests at any time. - Remember that your requested roommate(s) will
receive an email each time you add or delete them!
18What if I dont know anyone?Thats OK, too!
- If you do not have someone in mind that you would
like as a roommate, focus on choosing the best
available room. - Once you pick your room, you will immediately
have roommate and/or suitemate contact
information available on your MyHousing homepage. - Get in touch with your roommates email, call,
use a web community (ie- Facebook, MySpace, etc).
. . whatever is best for you!
19More Details onRoom Selection vs. Roommate
Matching
- You might wonder how compatibility matching will
work with your roommate since you are picking the
room and learning about your roommate after. - MSC and other schools have found that traditional
roommate matching works in some cases, but very
often a match that looks good on paper does not
make a perfect roommate pair. There are several
variables - Often, students fill out lifestyle choices based
on how they want their roommate to be not their
true lifestyle choices (ie a messy student may
want a very neat roommate ?) - Sometimes, the student is not the one filling out
the application and the person acting on their
behalf does not know the student as well as they
think! - Lastly, as intuitive as we try to make our
questions, there is always margin for error in
interpreting the answers. - The most successful housing assignments are made
by empowering the student - allowing the
applicant to see all available rooms and make a
choice! - If you find that you are incompatible with your
roommate, there is a room change process that
will be discussed previously.
20Youre done! Now what?
- Once your room is selected, it will be your
permanent assignment for the 2009-2010 academic
year - Unless you choose to participate in the Room
Changes Lottery mentioned previously
