Title: The Sermon on the Mount Mathew 5

1
The Sermon on the Mount (Mathew 5)
  • The Beatitudes

2
The Word Beatitude
  • Comes from a Latin word meaning happy or
    blessed.
  • In this passage alone, the word Bless is known
    as the Beatitudes.

3
The Beatitudes
  • Sets forth the spiritual principles of the
    kingdom of God.
  • They define the character of a child of the King.
  • They are not to be seen as a separate blessings
    for different believers.

4
The Beatitudes
  • The eight Beatitudes have continuity and are as
    follows

5
1. The Poor in Spirit
  • Denotes the fact of sin (53).
  • The poor in spirit are happy.
  • Focusing their minds to their condition.
  • They humble themselves and have lowly and low
self esteem in their own eyes.

6
1. The Poor in Spirit
  • They see their want.
  • They understand their guilt .
  • They thirst after a Redeemer Jesus Christ .

7
2. They That Mourn
  • Means to repent of sin (54).
  • Those that mourn are happy.
  • They have a godly sorrow, which brings true
repentance, watchfulness, and a humble mind.

8
3. The Meek
  • Describes not the weak, but rather strength that
is surrendered to God in a new birth experience
    (55).
  • The meek are those who quietly submit to God.
  • Who can bear insult are silent, or return a soft
    answer.

9
4. To Hunger and Thirst After Righteousness
  • Signifies the strong desire to become more
    Christ-like (56).
  • Righteousness is here for all spiritual blessings.
  • Our desire for Gods grace is a desire given from
    God.

10
5. The Merciful
  • Show an attitude of forgiveness (57).
  • Bear our own afflictions patiently.
  • Do all we can to help those who are in misery.
  • We must have compassion on the souls of others.

11
5. The Merciful
  • Help others and pity those who are in sin.
  • Seek to snatch them from hells door.

12
6. The Pure in Heart
  • Strive daily for clean living (58).
  • Holiness and happiness are fully described and
    put together.
  • Pray that your heart is purified by faith, and
    kept for God.
  • Pray that God will create in you such a clean
    heart.

13
7. The Peacemakers
  • Exert a calming influence in the storms of life
    (59).
  • They love, and desire, and delight in peace.
  • They keep the peace so that it is not broken, and
    recover it if it breaks.

14
8. Those Who Are Persecuted
  • Denotes faithfulness under stress (510-12).
  • Particular to Christianity.
  • It is more largely insisted upon than any of the
    rest.

15
8. Those Who Are Persecuted
  • How different are the values of Jesus from the
men of this world! They call the proud happy, and
admire the fun loving, the rich, the powerful,
and the victorious. May we find mercy from the
Lord may we be owned as his children, and
inherit his kingdom. With these enjoyments and
hopes, we may cheerfully welcome unpleasant or
    painful circumstances.

16
The Beatitudes
  • 1. The Poor in Spirit
  • 2. They That Mourn
  • 3. The Meek
  • 4. To Hunger and Thirst After Righteousness
  • 5. The Merciful
  • 6. The Pure in Heart
  • 7. The Peacemakers
  • 8. Those Who Are Persecuted

17
So How Do We Apply Them to Our Lives Today?
  • For those that mourn we can learn ways in which
we can minister to grief-stricken people

18
They That Mourn.
  • Realise the gift of your presence. Just calling
and being there can be of value.
  • Do not over talk the grieving person. Provide the
awesome power of the listening ear.
  • Let them know it is alright for them to grieve.
  • Be ready to minister to the griever for a long
    time.
  • Tactfully remind the griever of Him who said, I
am the resurrection, and the life he that
believe in me, though he were dead, yet shall he
live (John 1125), and invoke His blessing.

19
Always Be Salt.
  • Math 513You are the salt of the earth.
  • The word teaches us not to loose our saltiness,
as it would be no good for anything.

20
Always Shine
  • 2 Corinthians 41-6 Therefore, since through
Gods mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose
heart. 2Rather, we have renounced secret and
shameful ways we do not use deception, nor do we
distort the word of God. On the contrary, by
setting forth the truth plainly we commend
ourselves to every mans conscience in the sight
of God. 3And even if our gospel is veiled, it is
veiled to those who are perishing. 4The god of
this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so
that they cannot see the light of the gospel of
the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
5For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ
as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for
Jesus sake. 6For God, who said, Let light shine
out of darkness, He made his light shine in our
hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of
the glory of God in the face of Christ.

21
Watch Out for False Teaching and Know the Word of
God
  • Must season your life with knowledge and grace.
  • You must learn the ways of Christ and be of one
    heart and mind.

22
Watch What You Say and Control Your Tongue.
  • James 126-27. If anyone considers himself
religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on
his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion
is worthless. 27Religion that God our Father
accepts as pure and faultless is this to look
after orphans and widows in their distress and to
keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

23
Reconciliation
  • 2 Corinthians 518 All this is from God, who
reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave
us the ministry of reconciliation 19that God was
reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not
counting mens sins against them. And he has
committed to us the message of reconciliation.
20We are therefore Christs ambassadors, as
though God were making his appeal through us. We
implore you on Christs behalf Be reconciled to
God. 21God made him who had no sin to be sin for
us, so that in him we might become the
    righteousness of God.

24
Pure of Heart
  • Mathew 527-32 You have heard that it was said,
Do not commit adultery. 28But I tell you that
anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already
committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If
your right eye causes you to sin gouge it out and
throw it away. It is better for you to lose one
part of your body than for your whole body to be
thrown into hell. 30And if your right hand causes
you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is
better for you to lose one part of your body than
for your whole body to go into hell.

25
So How Does This Affect Us Today?
  • We must endeavour to seek God.
  • Repent each time we let our mind slip.
  • Bring it to God and seek his face.

26
Go the Extra Mile.
  • Mathew 538-42 You have heard that it was said,
Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth. 39But I tell
you do not resist an evil person. If someone
strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the
other also. 40And if someone wants to sue you and
take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.
41If someone forces you to go one mile, go with
him two miles. 42Give to the one who asks you,
and do not turn away from the one who wants to
    borrow from you.

27
Serious Reflection and Self-examination.
  • Prepare yourself for any religious exercises,
i.e. fasting, praying and church meetings.
  • While we are alive, we are on the way to his
judgement-seat after death, it will be too late.

28
We Must Be Victorious
  • Victory over the desires of the heart.
  • All our senses and powers must be kept from those
things, which lead us to transgressions.

29
Keep to the Truth
  • Truth and sincerity are associated.
  • Both are opposed to malice and evil.
  • The truth of God has being revealed not so much
in the law but in Christ.

30
Be Kind to All
  • The good work that people do shows the love of
    God.
  • Continue the good works and have faith also that
the acts that you do will change lives.

31
Love one another
  • All men are like grass,
  • and all their glory is like the flowers of the
    field
  • the grass withers and the flowers fall,
  • but the word of the Lord stands forever.

32
Final Command
  • Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is
    perfect.

33
The Result of Implementing the Teaching Into Your
Life.
  • 1) The church will instruct others in Christian
    doctrine.

2) Christs righteousness will be in your life.
3) The kingdom of God will be in your life.
34
Conclusion
  • You must put into practise the teachings of Jesus
    into your life.
  • Apply them to your life now.
  • Continually work into your life the teachings.
  • Weigh up each teaching with your spirit.

35
Life Application
  • Bring perfection in your life.
  • This is a life application not just a Sunday
    morning word!
  • May the Lord bless you
  • and may your walk with him bring perfection in
    your life.
