- Matriculation
- An institutional process that enhances access to
the CCCs and promotes and sustains the efforts
of credit students to be successful. - Matriculation is everybodys business
- Not just an upfront, student services process

- Ensure that all students
- complete courses
- persist to next term
- achieve educational objectives.

5Matriculation Components
- Admissions Provide a procedure for the
processing of the admissions application. Provide
modified or alternate services for the
matriculation process if necessary for ethnic and
language minority students and students with
disabilities. - Orientation Provide students and potential
students with information concerning college
programs, services, financial assistance,
facilities and grounds, academic expectations,
course scheduling and institutional procedures in
a timely manner.
6Matriculation Components
- Assessment Conduct assessment for all non-exempt
students to determine student competency in
computational and language skills. Assist
students in identifying their aptitudes,
interests, and educational objectives. Evaluate
students learning and study skills. - Counseling Provide comprehensive academic,
career and personal counseling services to
non-exempt students. Develop student educational
plan in written or electronic form. Make
appropriate referrals to support services.
7Matriculation Components
- Student Follow Up Provide post-enrollment
evaluation of each non-exempt students academic
progress. Establish a follow up system that
ensures the regular monitoring for early
detection of academic difficulty. Make referral
to appropriate services and curricula as
necessary. - Coordination and Training Develop and implement
a program for providing all faculty and staff
with training appropriate to their needs with
respect to the provision of matriculation
services.

- Research and Evaluation Establish and maintain
institutional research for evaluating efficacy of
matriculation services and remedial programs and
services. - Prerequisites Develop and implement a board
approved policy for the establishment and
enforcement of prerequisites, corequisites, and
advisories.
9Who Participates In Matriculation?
- Each College District responsible for determining
students who should participate in the
matriculation process. - Matriculation status determined by the
self-declared educational goal Most colleges
exempt students from matriculation who - Hold an Associate Degree or higher
10Which Students Are Encouraged To Participate in
Matriculation?
- Students who declare a goal of
- Transfer
- Associate Degree/Certificate
- Improve basic skills in English, reading or math
- Undecided on goal
11Other Students Who May Be Exempt
- Most colleges exempt a student from
matriculation whose goals is to - Discover/Formulate career goals
- Prepare for new career
- Sometimes, colleges exempt students based on the
number of units a student is enrolled in
12The Matriculation ProcessFor Non-Exempt Students
- After being admitted and determined non-exempt,
students - Complete placement tests in reading, English and
math (Using state validated/approved tests) - Complete orientation session
- Meet with a counselor to review assessment
results, goals and select courses - Register for classes
- Meet with counselor to develop Student Education

- Prerequisites, Corequisites and Advisories are
conditions of enrollment students are required to
meet prior to enrollment - Faculty identify the courses, skills or body of
knowledge in the prerequisite that are essential
to the success of the students

- Ensure that pre- and co- requisites are necessary

- Require students to meet conditions of enrollment
- Restrict enrollment in the course to students who
meet prerequisites - Provide students with procedures for challenging
prerequisites (NO WAIVERS)

- Computer blocking
- Instructor checking on the first day of class
- This method tends to be inconsistent and places
greater burden on instructor - Does not happen in a timely manner that allows
students to change classes, as needed
