• Join us and enjoy the adventure of staying on
  the USS Alabama overnight.
• We will meet promptly at 430pm at the gift
  shop, but we cannot board the ship until everyone
  is present.
• Only males are allowed to sleep on the ship with
  a chaperone . Opposite Sex Chaperons/Minors must
  sleep off the Ship. Females are invited to tour
  the ship, but must leave by 800pm.

• The cost is 20.00/person to sleep aboard the
  USS Alabama. You will need to provide your own
  sleeping bag and pillow.
• The pack will provide a pizza dinner and drinks.
• You may order a patch for 3.00 or t-shirt for
  9.00 in advance. (If you bought a patch a
  couple of years ago when we went, the patch has
  not changed.)
• Any females or siblings that want to go and tour
  the ship, you will receive a group rate of
  10.00/person. You may also order a shirt or
  patch for the same rate.

• Displacing more than 44,500 tons, the USS
  ALABAMA measures 680 feet from stem to stern,
  half as long as the Empire State Building is
  tall. Armed with nine, 16-inch guns in three
  turrets and 20, 5-inch, .38-caliber guns in 10
  twin mounts, her main batteries could fire shells
  as heavy as a small car accurately for a distance
  of more than 20 miles.Her steel side armor was
  a foot thick above the waterline, tapering to one
  half inch at the bottom. Her four propellers,
  each weighing more than 18 tons, could drive her
  through the seas at up to 28 knots, more than 32
  miles per hour. Loaded with 7,000 tons of fuel
  oil, her range was about 15,000 nautical miles.
  The USS ALABAMA was built to fight.By early
  1942 the USS ALABAMA was desperately needed. The
  Allies had their hands full against the Axis
  powers in the Atlantic. In the Pacific, the
  United States was embroiled in a bloody slugfest
  with Japan, and was still reeling from the Dec.
  7, 1941 disaster at Pearl Harbor.
• The USS ALABAMA saw 37 months of active duty
  during World War II, earning nine Battle Stars.
  The Mighty A as she came to be known, safely
  carried her crew throughout the Atlantic and
  Pacific Ocean campaigns, and never suffered any
  casualties or significant damage due to enemy
  fire. After the war, she was mothballed on Puget
  Sound at Bremerton, Wash., in 1947.
• On Jan. 9, 1965, the Mighty A was opened to
  the public as an independent agency of the state
  of Alabama. Since then, more than 13 million
  visitors have trod her decks and stood in awe of
  her majestic presence. The submarine USS DRUM, a
  World War II veteran with 12 Battle Stars, joined
  the USS ALABAMA on July 4, 1969.

The DRUM refers to any of various fishes capable
of making a drumming noise best known, and named
for a large sea bass off the North Atlantic
Coast.The USS DRUM (SS-228) was launched May
12, 1941 by Portsmouth Navy Yard, New Hampshire,
sponsored by Mrs. Thomas Holcomb.   She was
commissioned November 1, 1941, CDR R.H. Rice in
command.DRUM arrived at Pearl Harbor from the
east coast April 1, 1942, and after a voyage to
Midway, cleared Pearl Harbor April 14, 1942,
action bound on her first war patrol.   Cruising
off the coast of Japan, she sank the seaplane
Tender MIZUHO and three cargo ships in the month
of May, returning to Pearl Harbor June 12th to
refit. Of DRUM's 13 war patrols, all save the
second, ninth, and last two were designated
"successful".  She received a total of 12 battle
stars for World War II service. She is credited
with sinking 15 ships, a total of 80,580 tons of
enemy shipping, eighth highest of all U.S.
submarines in total Japanese tonnage sunk.The
DRUM was donated to the USS ALABAMA Battleship
Commission on April 14th, 1969.   She was towed
to Mobile arriving May 18th, 1969.  The DRUM was
dedicated and opened to the public on July 4th
1969.
