  • Introduction
  • Attention getteran amazing fact, statistic,
    anecdote that illustrates the significance of the
    problem
  • Establish the argument (controversy) and clarify
    the importance of the issue (why should we care?)
  • You are briefly proving that there is a problem,
    that there is controversy, and that your audience
    (we) should care.

  • Tell the story behind the problem and argument,
    offering background information
  • This means you are providing any information we
    need to know to understand the circumstances that
    produced the controversy.
  • This is the history of the problem, including
    what has lead up to the controversy. To prove
    there is controversy, you should survey the
    argument.
