- Data handling
- Current status of the numerical experiments
- Discuss about the future of GSWP2
- Following meetings AMS San Diego,

3Goals of GSWP2 (1)
- Produce the best global data sets of soil
moisture, surface fluxes, and related hydrologic
quantities (including runoff) for 1986-1995 with
1x1 degree grid spacing considering the
uncertainties associated with - Land surface models more than 20 LSSs
- Model parameters 2 kinds of vegetation etc.
- Forcing data 3 kinds of reanalysis data,
corrected precipitation, etc. - Temporal and spatial scales to run LSSs
4Goals of GSWP2 (2)
- Develop and test in situ and remote sensing
validation, calibration, and assimilation
techniques over land. - Provide a large-scale validation and quality
check of the ISLSCP-II data sets. - Compare LSSs, and conduct sensitivity analyses of
specific parameterizations. - Interannual variation of soil moisture (etc.)
- Transferability of soil moisture estimated by
LSSs one to another.
5Quality Checks
- All the mandatory variables are included?
- Apparent error or broken data in the file?
- Compatible with ALMA conventions?
- name of variables, signs and units
- Values within reasonable range for each variable?
- Consistency of the energy and water balances?
- Validations by local flux obs., river discharge,
and satellite RS (total water storage?).
6Inter Comparisons
- Compare the energy and water balances
- 10 year mean global field
- Any drift of the state variables?
- Annual/monthly means and their variations
- Histogram of daily (or pentad) values
- Transferability of soil moisture
- Inter-annual variation of the global fields
- ENSO/NAO/Dipole over land ? Nature!
- Relation between empirical classification of
model behaviors and model structures
7Applications
- Feedback to ISLSCP
- Best Reasonable global field of soil moisture,
river runoff, evapotranspiration, - Apply GSWP2 outputs as SST over land for AGCM
experiments - World water resources assessment
- PUB (Prediction of Ungaged Basins) by IAHS
- Components considered in LSSs and estimated
global water energy balances - with a table of LSS structures by ICC
8GSWP2 for GEWEX
- Science and Implementation Plan is ready.

- GSWP2 fits to major objectives of GEWEX
- Obj1 produce consistent descriptions of the
Earths energy budget and water cycle and their
variability and trends, over land. - Obj2 water cycle process and climate feedbacks
- Obj3 developing improved parameterizations
- Obj4 determining the predictability
- Obj5 water resources and applications
9Logistics (1)
- All the presenters are asked to provide their
presentation files to Mr. Naota Hanasaki, the
person in charge for ICC. - Presentations can be made by the common PC or you
can plug in your Laptop. - Please consult at the registration desk with Mr.
Kei (K) Yoshimura, the research associate of
IIS/UT, and Ms. Kayoko Takino at RIHN, for
logistics and travel support issues.
10Logistics (2)
- All the participants are invited to the Banquet
of the GSWP2 workshop tonight, Monday Sep. 13, at
Shirakawa no ma, on the 3rd Floor of Heian
Kaikan, here, from 1830. - Group dinner is planned on Wednesday, Sep 15, at
an authentic Japanese restaurant in Gion
district, the most famous historic district in
Kyoto. Cost will be approximately
5,000yen/person. Please inform the registration
desk about your interest of participation.
11THANK YOU!Enjoy the Workshop!
