CE Linux Forum
The CE Linux Forum (CELF) is focused on the
advancement of Linux as an open source
platform for consumer electronics devices.
4

  • Mitsubishi
  • Monta Vista
  • Motorola
  • NEC
  • NXP
  • Panasonic
  • Philips
  • Samsung
  • Sharp
  • Sony

  • Toshiba

6
AG Role
  • Oversee technical working groups
  • Manage forum technical outputs
  • Source code
  • Specifications
  • Oversee technical projects and special
    initiatives
  • Test lab, wiki, conferences, contract work
  • Liaison with the open source community and other
    organizations

7
CELF Technical Work
  • Technical Workgroups
  • Contract work
  • Conferences
  • Technical output
  • Special Projects

8
Technical Workgroups
  • Audio, Video, Graphics
  • Boot Technologies
  • Digital Television
  • Memory Management
  • Power Management
  • Real Time
  • Security
  • System Size

9
CELF Test Lab
  • Located in San Jose
  • Support for automated and remote operation
  • Power control, serial console, etc
  • Test scheduling via a web interface
  • Run regression tests on Linux kernel
  • Results published at testlab.celinuxforum.org
  • One example Bloatwatch

10
Hardware Donations
  • Architecture Group has small amount of money to
use to donate hardware to community developers

11
DLNA Relationship
  • CELF is a member of DLNA's liaison program
  • This gives us early access to specs under NDA
  • We also get 3 free specifications, as they are
    made available to the public

12
Ideas to support DLNA effort
  • Specifications
  • Hardware
  • Plugfests
  • DLNA Certification
  • DLNA Test Suites
  • Sponsoring DLNA membership
  • Code donation
  • Work Donation
  • Summits
  • Funded Project work

13
Specifications
  • CELF can donate DLNA specifications to open
    source projects.
  • We get 3 copies for free
  • We could purchase more if necessary
  • 2 copies of the spec have already been delivered
  • I have one sitting on my desk in San Jose
  • I also have 3 stacks of update documents sitting
    on my desk
  • Who would like these?

14
Hardware
  • It might be nice to provide hardware for DLNA
    compatibility testing
  • How to get hardware
  • CELF has a small budget for hardware for
    developers
  • CELF could allocate additional funds for this
    specific purpose
  • CELF could ask members to donate requested
    products
  • What hardware is desireable?

15
Plugfests
  • DLNA hosts plugfests
  • These are events where companies bring their
    products to test interoperability.
  • They are covered by NDA
  • I don't think its a good fit for open source
  • How about hosting our own plugfest - either
standalone or at a CELF conference
  • CELF could provide hardware (see previous slide),
venue or logistical support for an event

16
DLNA Certification
  • DLNA certification can be obtained through a
    DLNA-certified lab
  • You must be a DLNA member to certify (I think)
  • Maybe a lab can test interoperability, without
    granting an official certification
  • I believe certification is granted to a
    software/hardware combination
  • It might not make sense to try to certify
    software by itself
  • Maybe the certification should be the
responsibility of the hardware maker who uses an
    OSS DLNA stack

17
DLNA Test Suites
  • Test suites from the DLNA organization are
    available to DLNA members
  • CELF members may have DLNA test suites they would
be willing to loan, or make open source, for use
    by OSS DLNA projects

18
Sponsoring DLNA Membership
  • CELF could pay for DLNA membership for an
organization that was leading an open source DLNA
    project
  • CELF could convince DLNA to create a special
class of member for open source projects
  • Given the IP rules for DLNA membership, this
    seems unlikely to work

19
Code donation
  • One or more CELF members could donate code to
seed or assist and open source effort

20
Work donation
  • CELF members could apply engineering resources to
    OSS DLNA project work
  • Work could be development, testing, documenting,
    etc.

21
Summits
  • CELF and/or DLNA could support future summits, if
    this one is helpful

22
Funded Project work
  • CELF could fund DLNA development and maintenance
    work

23
Notes on working with DLNA
  • DLNA chair and board
  • DLNA contact information
  • How to influence DLNA

24
DLNA Chair and Board
  • Scott Smyers (Sony) is the Chair of DLNA
  • Interesting Trivia Scott Smyers founded CELF and
DLNA the same day - June 23, 2003. (one in Tokyo
    and one in San Francisco)
  • DLNA Board of Directors is
  • Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Intel,
    Microsoft, HP, Nokia
  • 7 out of 8 are CELF companies, friendly to open
    source

25
DLNA Contact information
  • CELF's DLNA liaison is Manjunath Ramachandra
  • DLNA's Industry Liaison Subcommittee Chairman is
    Michael Stelts
  • DLNA's executive director is Donna Moore
  • DLNA's Ecosystem Committee chairs are Scott
Loffgren of Intel and Jim Battaglia of Pioneer.
  • This group might have an interest in supporting
    open source projects around DLNA.

26
Influencing DLNA
  • Scott believes the board would consider adopting
an open source DLNA stack as a reference stack
  • Scott recommends pushing things through the
liaison or ecosystem groups, but also by having a
board member bring up a topic directly to the
    board (for funding, requests, etc.)
  • Scott believes the DLNA would be responsive to
    funding requests for certain activities
  • Should consider DLNA assistance in all activity
    ideas for CELF sponsorship
