- Tonight is our first fundraising event, the goal
being to raise 10,000 to help orphaned and
abandoned children in Kiev, Ukraine, where
Scotland play football in October. - Why?
- The Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal donates at least
1,000 to a childrens cause at every away match,
but why go the extra mile for the Ukraine
fixture? - 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster
- Edinburgh is twinned with Kiev
- We know some Ukrainians
- Isnt Ukraine a wealthy country?
- Ukraine ( ??????? ) is a country with a
decreasing population of 50 million, Kiev (Kyiv,
???? ) 2.6m - Although the fall of Communism has brought about
considerable personal freedom, the Ukrainian
economy has suffered hugely. In Ukraine the
average monthly wage is 40 and thats for those
lucky enough to find work. - High levels of poverty, unemployment, alcoholism,
inability to cope and other problems contribute
to parents being unable to care for their own
children, leaving thousands abandoned. According
to official 2003 statistics provided by the
Ukrainian government, approximately 50,000 street
children live in Ukraine, 12,000 of which are in
Kiev. Once on the streets many become victims of
drug and solvent abuse. Many are also becoming
infected by HIV and large numbers of street
children turn to prostitution as a means for
survival.
26 William Street, Edinburgh, 0131 226 1036
The sister of A Room in the Town, bringing a
Scottish theme into William Street in Edinburgh's
West End. The emphasis is on quality, fresh and
affordable Scottish produce in a relaxed and
friendly atmosphere this really is a gem of a
restaurant, perfect for a romantic candle-lit
dinner or an evening with friends.
26 William Street, Edinburgh
In our opinion, the spiritual home of Highlanders
FC is quite possibly the best pub in
Edinburgh. This is the perfect place to relax -
bright colours, simple wooden furniture and
candles give a warm welcoming feeling at all
times. With excellent beer and whiskey selections
and friendly bar staff, Teuchters is simply a
great place to spend an hour or an evening.

Tonights event has been supported by a variety
of businesses and individuals, in a variety of
ways. Although some of the sponsors have asked
for anonymity, were more than happy to tell you
about the others.
So weve chosen two institutions to help
out. Apsern Suggested to us by the British
Embassy in Kiev, this home has 40 children and
also does other work with street children
orphans. They are opening a second home soon,
so they'll be needing as much help as we can give
them. Kiev Special School of Arts for
Children with Impaired Vision Suggested to us
by Edinburgh-based photographer Alina Kisina,
this school is home to 120 children from the
age of 3, all of whom are either blind or
partially blind. Because of a severe lack of
state support, these children live in squalid
surroundings and need basics like shoes
blankets. .and yet this school is
inspirational. Art, music crafts are used to
rehabilitate educate these children, giving
them hope and purpose, and a way to provide for
themselves when they leave.
Archerfield Links is an entirely private haven
for those who love golf and the seclusion and
historic beauty of their 500 -acre East Lothian
surroundings. Theyve kindly donated a 4-ball tee
time for the raffle tonight.
These abandoned babies are allowed by the state
only minimum contact from staff to prevent bonding
WWAV RC in Edinburgh are a team of talented and
experienced individuals, part of Europes leading
DM network, but with the edge of an independent
agency.
Theyre also a generous bunch, having donated the
200 One Spa vouchers tonight!
Royal Bank of Scotland, who kindly provided us
with the priceless 5 note signed by golfing
legend Jack Nicklaus, as well as the F1 William
BMW cap, signed by Mark Webber Nico
Rosberg. The Scottish Football Association, who
as usual came up trumps with a new Scotland top
signed by Walter Smiths squad this
week. MasterCard, who donated the Champions
league tickets.

Tartan Army Sunshine Appeal All money raised
tonight will contribute towards the Tartan Army
Sunshine Appeals Kiev donation, to be made in
October when Scotland play Ukraine.
Chorna Roza
Tonights entertainment are a young, relatively
new Ukrainian band, dedicated to playing
traditional Ukrainian music in a contemporary
style.
To quote a message from their own website,
www.chorna-roza.com, they are quite honestly the
best zabava band around. For those of us who
have never sampled zabava before tonight,
apparently were in for a treat. Like a ceilidh
but wilder is what I was told Thanks go to
Tesco Personal Finance, who very generously paid
for the bands appearance tonight.
www.Tescofinance.com
The TASA makes a donation to a childrens charity
at every Scotland away match, and dates back to
1999 when a group of Scotland supporters heard
about Kemal Karic, a Bosnian boy orphaned and
maimed by artillery in Sarajevo. His mother was
killed as she ran carrying 3 month old Kemal,
whos leg was blown off just above the knee. As
they set about raising money for Kemo, the
generosity and imagination of the Tartan Army
became apparent. Enough was raised to pay for a
new prosthetic leg for Kemo (and another for when
hes outgrown that one) and to carry out
essential work on his Grandmothers house where
he now lives. It soon became clear that the
fundraising would continue, and the Sunshine
Appeal made its aim "to bring a little sunshine
to the lives of children whose countries were
visited by the Tartan Army on tour. Since then
there has been a donation of 1k/2k at every
Scotland away match including friendlies, as well
as other donations (clothes, toys etc) from the
Tartan Army, friends and colleagues.
Our hats off also to DniproKids, a group of Hibs
supporters who have been fundraising to provide
for orphans in Dnipropetrovsk, since their team
played there in the UEFA Cup two seasons ago.
Not only have they come along tonight en-mass
to support our effort, but organiser Steven Carr
has been a source of great advice over the last
month or so.

Alina Kisina An award winning Ukrainian
photographer now based in Edinburgh, Alina
approached us to suggest the School for Children
with Impaired Vision. A Patron of the school,
Alina is very passionate about the difference the
school makes to disabled children's lives,
especially using the arts to educate and
rehabilitate.
Highlanders FC
Event organisers Carey McEvoy Alex Demianczuk
are strike-partners for Edinburgh amateur side
Seaforth Highlanders. Established 11 seasons ago
by two lads from Lewis as a home-from-home for
Highlanders and Islanders, the club now has two
sides (Seaforth Caledonian) playing in the
Lothian Edinburgh AFA. The Club runs a bus to
every Scotland home match and has a number of
Tartan Army regulars. It also makes regular
charitable donations to Scottish childrens
causes, but when Scotland were drawn against
Ukraine, the Seaforth strikers recognised a great
opportunity to do something a bit bigger.

Alina has also kindly provided us with a raffle
prize tonight. Nadya, the photograph (below)
donated, is a framed and signed image from the
series Inner Space Crossing the Border
Window The idea behind it was to study windows
as a boundary line between the street world and
private space of ones home. A portrait of a
window can tell a lot about the inhabitant by
showing the outside world from his prospective.
The photograph is a part of a varied edition,
each copy being unique.
