making plans.

- By the end of this introductory unit pupils will

3Introductory Unit Using symbols and making
plans.
4 Introductory Unit Lesson 1 Familiarisation
with the playground, and gaining a sense of
place.
- Class walk around the playground to familiarise
children with the relative locations of
playground games and furniture. Discussion in
the field of playground features and their
spatial relationship to each other. - This field walk was also an ideal opportunity
to verbally trial the 4 senses technique,
enabling the children to get a sense of place
by expressing what they could see, hear, and
smell, and how they felt.

features using a digital camera.
- The children used a digital
- camera to record images
- of all the playground features.

7Introductory Unit Lesson 3 Devising symbols for
playground plans, and completing a key.
The children were encouraged to devise and colour
their own symbols to simply and clearly represent
the playground feature.
8Introductory Unit Lesson 4 Spatial awareness
and spatial relationships.
- The children enjoyed the Hide and Reveal.
- They predicted which playground feature
- had been hidden, based on knowledge
- they gained in their field observations.

plans.
- The children were given a basic outline
- of the playground in which to locate the
- playground features using the symbols
- they had created in the key.
11Introductory Unit Lesson 6 Awareness and
evaluation of the playground facilities likes,
dislikes wishes.
- This lesson rounded off
- the introductory unit by
- enabling the children to
- evaluate their local
- environment.
