Severe Behavior Handicap
  • A child with severe behavioral handicap exhibits
    behavior that interferes with his or her school
    work and also has extreme difficulty getting
    along with others.
  • Its has also been referred to as emotional
    handicaps or disturbances, social maladjusted
    delinquency, behavior disorders, conduct disorder
    or psychological disturbance.

Safety Issues that are of concern.
  • Student or students may harm others or
    themselves.
  • Student or students may not follow specific
    safety rules while in shop, causing an unsafe
    environment for all involved.

What To Look For.
  • Some characteristics
  • Hyperactivity, aggressive/self-injurious
    behavior, delinquency, withdrawal interaction
    with others, difficulty maintaining friendships,
    excessive fear, severe phobia, truancy, poor
    coping skills, inappropriate crying, and learning
    problems.

  • Class/Campus Disruption
  • Leaving The Classroom Without Permission
  • Fighting
  • Total Defiance

What Can I do to help others help themselves.
  • Get as much information or background as you can.
  • Understand that each student has individual
    needs.
  • Try to catch any disruptive behavior in the
    anxiety stage.
  • Establish a set schedule allowing for very few
    changes to be made.
  • Try to get parental support.
  • Follow the schools proactive plan.
  • Support the student if and when he/she returns to
    your classroom.
  • Be consistent and follow through.
  • Notice the positive behaviors and reward the
    child for doing something good.

What Can I Do To Compensate?
  • Give extra time to complete assignments.
  • Reward the Good behavior and work completed.

  • When in doubt regarding any student, use all
    resources available to you.
