Definition of Plagiarize(Merriam Webster
Dictionary)
  • To steal and pass off the ideas or words of
    another as ones own
  • To use (another persons work) without crediting
    the source
  • To commit literary theft

4
Examples of Plagiarism
  • Cut and paste from the internet
  • Copy from a book
  • Use other people words without use of quotation
    marks
  • Change only a few words
  • Copy another persons paper
  • Have a parent write for you
  • Anything that is not your work

5
Why is Plagiarism Wrong
  • Cheats you out of learning
  • Cheats the person who is not receiving credit for
    their hard work
  • Plagiarism is stealing

6
Example of Plagiarism
  • McKinley, a malamute dog, is torn between the
domestic world of his human family and his boy
owner, Jack, and the wild world of Lupin, a wolf,
that is trying to recruit dogs to replenish the
dwindling wolf pack. Steamboat Springs, Colorado,
is the perfect rugged setting for this fast-paced
boy-dog adventure story. McKinley is the "head
dog" in town, and finds his role challenged not
only by the wolf, but by Redburn, a large Irish
Setter. McKinley's responsibility as leader of
the town dogs, and protector of the boy Jack,
often places him in dangerous situations.

Is this Plagiarism?
  • Danielle has to write a paragraph about the
Oregon Trail for her social studies report. She
found the perfect paragraph on the Internet and
copied it in her own handwriting.
  • Scott forgot his homework at school. His friend
Max has already completed the assignment. Max
e-mailed his finished homework to Scott. Scott
put his name on it and turned it in.

Is this Plagiarism?
  • Sydney is writing a report on why schools should
recycle. She finds a perfect quote that supports
her position. She copies and pastes it in her
    paper.
  • Shannon copies and pastes a page from the Web
into the middle of her document. She then goes
through and changes some of the words.

Evaluating a Website
  • Anyone can be an author on the World Wide Web.
  • Site creators dont have to be experts in any
    subject.
  • Their facts dont have to be true.
  • They dont have to fix errors if some are found.
  • They can pretend that their opinions are true
    facts.
  • They can even choose to include unkind or harmful
    statements.
  • All thats really needed in order to be a Web
author is knowledge of how to build a site.
  • With the software available today, it is even
easier to create a site than it was a couple of
    years ago.
  • So, when you need to research a topic, which Web
    sites should you trust?
  • Its up to you to judge which sites are the good
    ones.
  • You also need to judge which sites meet your
    needs.

12
Website Evaluation Criteria
  • Is the site open to everyone?
  • Is the site sponsored by any organizations?
  • Is the author identified by name?
  • Is the sites domain .edu, .net, .org, or .gov?
  • Is the site without spelling, typographical, and
    grammatical errors?
  • Is the date the article, page, or site was
    created given?
  • Is there advertising?
