Title: Polymers

1
Polymers
  • . A polymer is a substance which is composed of
molecules which contain large molecular masses
consisting of repeating structural units, or
monomers, attached by covalent chemical bonds.

2
Rubber
  • both rubber and plastic are each considered to be
    both synthetic and natural materials

3
Rubber and Plastic Bonding
  • If a tire was crossed with a plastic milk
bottle, together they could form a tire based
composite which would be suitable for impact
barriers, earth retainers, and curb blisters.
This would create a tire that was cheap and able
    to absorb energy much better.

4
Vulcanization
  • Known as the curing of rubber.
  • This results in the bouncy rubber molecules
becoming cross linked to a greater or maybe a
lesser extent. This makes the bulk material
harder, more durable, as well as more resistant
    to chemical attack.
