Title: Waste

2WASTE
- Commonly called ad Garbage or Rubbish
We all have to start thinking about the amount of
waste we are throwing away because waste disposal
has become a major environmental and economic
concern.
3History of Waste in Australia
Historically, Aboriginal people barely produced
any rubbish. The only signs of waste from our
original inhabitants are piles of shell, bone and
stone debris called middens.
4Early Europeans settlers in Australia produced
very little rubbish as items were difficult to
get in the first place and were often reused.
Food scraps were fed to dogs, pigs or chooks. No
packaging was more common than it is today and
many items were repaired rather than thrown away.
5Unitl the 1970s people burnt a lot of their
waste in their backyard so landfill was not a big
problem
This was stopped due to air pollution concern.
6- Today, our way of living has changed disposable
goods and convenience foods from supermarkets
that have lots of packaging are now common.
Disposable items such as tissues and nappies are
now often used instead of reusable items.
As modern manufacturing processes make goods
easier to produce, people often buy a new product
rather than fixing a broken one
7Why is Landfill a Problem?
Not in my backyard
Landfill is where all our garbage goes. Landfill
sites require space that might otherwise be bush
land or public space. Many people object to new
landfill sites. They are concern about smell,
pollution and property values.
- pollution of surface or ground water with
contaminants from waste - the creation on nuisance odors and dust
- the risk of property damage due to release of
flammable or toxic gases - the release of pollutants into the atmosphere
8For these reasons it is important that we
minimise the amount of garbage going to landfill
by adapting the
9Australias Waste Record
- On a per person basis, Australia is 2nd highest
producer of waste in the world. - (approx. 800 kg/person/year)
10Do You Know?
- Each year Australians produce 21 million tonnes
of waste. - (This would fit into a line of garbage trucks
from Melbourne to London and halfway back) - About 36 of total waste is recycled
11WAs Waste
- In WA, waste production is above the national
average 1.7 tonnes per person each year (2000). - An average of 16 of waste is separated for
recycling in WA homes (2000). - The 1993 target of 50 waste diversion yet to
be achieved.
12Recycling Saves..Every tonne of paper recycled
saves almost 13 trees, 2.5 barrels of oil, 4100
kWh of electricity, 4 cubic metres of landfill
and 31, 780 litres of water
The energy saved from recycling 1 aluminium can
would power a TV for 3 hours. Twenty aluminium
cans can be recycled with the same energy
required to produce one new can from raw
materials.

13On average in Australia, each person sends 15.7kg
of garbage to landfill per week thats 816.4kg
a year! 44 of household waste going to
landfill is organic matter ABS 1997

Abu Bakr (First Khalifah) ordered his soldiers
before a battle as follows Do not kill an old
man, a woman or a child. Do not harm date palms
or cut down trees. Do not slaughter any sheep,
cows or camels except for food. You will meet
people who spend their lives in monasteries,
leave them alone, and do not disturb them. Even
at the time of battles they still cared for the
environment around them.

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said Cleanliness
is half of ones faith Everything around us must
be clean and pure, meaning we should not harm or
dirty the environment around us.

loves not the wasters.

The messenger of Allah peace be upon him
said Removing harmful things from the path is
charity.
The AIC Green Club, with the help of the
teachers, have conducted a waste wise audit to
find out the types of waste we produce at our
school. In a particular period the club members
were picking up rubbish and we made a survey
paper and this was the result
