  • Historical Context Religious beliefs of
    practices have often played an important role in
    shaping the culture and historical development of
    a nation or region.

ISLAM-THE MIDDLE EAST
  • The Koran is the religious book writen by
    Muhammad and inspire by the Angel Gabriel.
  • Muhammad is considered the last and most perfect
    messengers to mankind.
  • 5 PILLARS of ISLAM
  • 1) Recognize Ala as the one true God.
  • 2)Paryer (3 times/day)
  • 3) giving alms (giving to the poor)
  • 4)Must take one pilgramig to Mecca
  • 5)Fasting

Islam has Five Articles of faith
  • God there is one true God and His name is Allah
  • Angels exist and interact with human lives by
    bringing us messages
  • Holy Texts the Koran (Quran), the Old Testament
    the New Testament.
  • Prophet Messengers of God, Mohamad is belived to
    be the last prophet.

Divisions of Islam
  • The religion of Islam has many divisions,
    schools, traditions, and related faiths
  • Sunni Muslims are the largest denomination of
    Islam. They elect their Caliph (religious
    leader).
  • Sufi is the second largest, it is for people to
    find spiritual truth. Sufis share a common bond
    for the supernatural, mysterious view of God.
  • Shia believe that Ali was chosen by Muhammad to
    be a leader after him and future leaders are
    desendants of Muhamed.

HINDUISM-INDIA
  • Oldest Monotheistic Religion.
  • CASTE SYSTEM- people were on different levels in
    society, low to high
  • KARMA- your behavior in one life, determines what
    your life will be in the next world
  • DHARMA- An individual obligation for proper
    behavior.
  • REINCARNATION- they believe that when a person
    dies they come back and live they life all over
    again until they get it right

JUDAISM-ISREAL
  • TORAH-the word of God, teaches about the old
    Testament
  • ABRAHAM-the first patriarch, father of Isaac
  • MOSES-Jewish prophet and law giver
  • MONOTHEISM-believe in one God
  • TEN COMMANDMENTS- a set of laws given to Moses
    from God (examples, one should not kill or
    worship idols)

Protestantism Western Europe
  • During the Renaissance, Martin Luther questioned
    the Catholic Churchs authority.
  • The Catholic Church asked people to pay
    indulgences (pay money so that your sins are
    forgiven)
  • Martin Luther also wanted to the Bible to be
    published in German for his people undertsand and
    interpret it for themselves.
  • He was against confessions. He believed that
    people should only confess to god.
  • But Luther was also anti-sametic (he hated the
    Jews) and blames them for killing Jesus. He also
    forced them to convert. Luther spread propaganda
    (he said that the Jews poisned water and caused
    the Plague).

    they. 1. Right View/Understanding,2. Right
    Speech,3. Right Action, 4. Right Livelihood 5.
    Right Effort 6. Right Mindfulness 7. Right
    Concentration 8. Right Thought
