5Why Use Polyurethane? (2002)
- Cures at normal exterior temperatures
- Flexible even at low temperatures
- Generally tough, with excellent resistance to
abrasion and puncture - High durometer formulations
- High adhesion characteristics
Polyurethanes form a flexible net, essentially
forming a molecular spring

15Features of our BD Polyurethanes
- All are 11 ratio systems
- Achieve fast, positive cure
- Good green strength for handling
- Moisture insensitivity allows cure at low
temperatures - Manageable pot life
- NSF 61 certified for Elastuff 120
- MDI based technology, lower toxicity than TDI
- Primerless technology, contamination tolerant
(oils and grease) - Very ratio tolerant when compared to polyureas
or other polyurethanes
16What is PolyButadiene?
Key A Stable All-Carbon Backbone
17Unique Features of our BD Polyurethanes
- Hydrolytic Stability Low Moisture Vapor
Transmission - Exceptional Low Temperature Flexibility and
Elongation - Excellent Chemical Resistance to Acids and Bases
- Excellent Adhesion Attributed to Low Surface
Energy - Excellent Abrasion Resistance
- Very Low Shrinkage While Curing
- Very Low Exotherm During Cure
Many properties are superior than those derived
from any other urethane system
18Study on Flexibility Temperature (2002)
BD Urethanes show some of the traits of butyl, as
is used in the manufacturing of automobile tires

21Hydrolysis Key Factor in Predicting Polyurethane
Aging (2002)
Hydrolytic attack (water) of Urethane or
Polyester UV Exposure Chemical
attack Hysteresis Mechancial properties
22High Tensile and Elongation Polyurethane Coatings
for OD Pipeline Protection
23Polyurethane vs. Epoxy
100s 1000s of cycles
Already under stress the polymer breaks
Polyurethanes wont crack or chip under stress
24Fusion Bond Epoxy Approach
Polyethylene\Polypropylene wrap flexible but
requires heat and dedicated processing equipment.
Epoxy a good primer, but brittle
Fusion Bond uses two very different materials
together to make up for the weaknesses of each
alone
25What are Rigid Urethanes
26Polyurethane Approach
Polyurethane is flexible, like the PE wrap used
in the fusion bond system
Polyurethane has good adhesion like the Epoxy
primer used in the fusion bond system
High solids polyurethanes combine flexibility,
toughness, and abrasion resistance in one
product!
27Polyurethanes Big Advantage
No seams!
28Other Advantages
- Low cost, efficient application (plural spray)
- Direct application to abrasive-blasted steel
possible - High resistance to damage
- Unlimited film build capability
- Extremely short set time prior to handling
Urethanes dont shrink when curing, so they
dont have film build limitations
29There are Three Key Challenges
- Corrosion control on steel, especially at liquid
gas interfaces - adhesion is key. - Chemical Resistance, water, hydrocarbons and
oxygenated solvents - Degradation from heat (oxidation)
304 Predictors of Protection by Coatings
Rigid polyurethane products are particularly
effective in steel pipe applications.
31Key Performance Requirements
- Cathodic Disbondment Resistance
- Adhesion (gt2000 PSI)
- Penetration resistance (gt80 Shore D)
- Impact Resistance (gt15 Elongation)
- Bendabilty/Flexibility
- Hydrophobicity
32Fit for Use Petro Chemical
Threats from Industrial Petrochemical
environments
33Key Application Traits
- Fast Cure (minutes) - 100 solids Most
economical on a dry film basis - Equal volume ratio 11, for precise mixing
- 100 Solids eliminates solvent popping, toxicity,
- and other cure limitations
- Aliphatics have exceptional weather resistance
- Polyureas and BD urethanes tolerate humidity
34Polyurethanes on Insulated Pipe
- Forms chemical bonds with insulation
- Acts as a flexible and impact resistant skin
- Adequate and even coating gt 700µ /- 50
- Aliphatic topcoat recommended
- Maintain a watertight membrane
35Elastuff and Joint Treatment
We employ a process we call cold pickling. Our
product is called Elastuff Metal Conditioner
(EMC) It enhances covalent reactions between the
Urethane and the iron itself, mostly by
increasing surface area exposed for adhesion
EMC is weldable
36United Coatings Aliphatic Topcoats
- ELASTUFF 200 Pure Aliphatic Polyurea Elastomer
- ELASTUFF 210 Aliphatic Polyurea Enamel
- ELASTUFF 255 Moisture Cure Aliphatic (60)
37How EMC Works
1. Improves bond by preventing and
neutralizing flash rust 2. Remove
Blast Contamination Overall
effect allow Coating to
Bond Chemically with
steel
38How EMC Works
3. Increases Surface Area Available for
More Chemical Bonds 4. Provides 3-D
locking Overall effect
Coatings Chemical and
Mechanical Bonding
is Maximized
39EMC Bonus
Increases Weld Strength 40-60 by these same
mechanisms
