Affect or Effect?
  • As a general rule, affect is a verb and effect is
    a noun.
  • The exceptions Affect meaning emotion or mood
is a noun. Effect meaning to cause (Effect
    change) is a verb.
  • You will rarely use these exceptions unless your
study is about emotion. If this is the case, be
    doubly careful!

8
Tips for intro style
  • Start with a broad statement that hooks your
    reader
  • Using logical argumentation and prior research,
lead the reader to your experiment idea
  • Leave your experiment idea until the end! But the
reader should start to get an idea of what it
will be as they are reading it
  • Dont assume that your reader knows what your
study is lay out the basics in plain language,
save the details for the methods section

Methods
  • Should include 3 parts
  • Participants include some demographic
information and how/where subjects were found
  • Materials give details! Explain all the
materials so someone could replicate your study
  • Procedure same as materials. You dont have to
give exact script but describe what the
    participants went through and how
  • Due next Tuesday

11
Headings (If you need more than three, consult
me or the APA guide)
  • First Level
  • Second Level Like This
  • Third Level Like This

12
For example
  • Methods
  • Participants
  • Ten undergraduate students at UCSC.
  • Materials
  • Pen and paper were used.
  • Procedure
  • We told them what to do and they did.

13
Coming up next week
  • A very short presentation of your research
  • I mean it, keep it short!
  • Explain your hypothesis and how you tested it
  • We will then discuss things like IV, DV, how to
analyze, the best kinds of figures, etc.
  • Really, we want it to be short!
  • Any number of people from your group can actually
    do the presenting
  • Dont stress! It should be under 5 minutes!
