Holiness
  • Obedience, because G-d says so
  • Filled with grace/fill with grace.
  • The ability to distinguish between right and
wrong, good and evil, pure and defiled, the
sacred and the profane, is very important in
    Judaism

18
Kashrut- Kaf-Shin-Resh, proper/correct ways
  • Dietary law
  • Family table is an alter
  • Holidays - history.
  • Remember

19
Dietary Laws
  • Of the "Beasts of the Earth" (Which Basically
Refers to Land Mammals With the Exception of
Swarming Rodents), You May Eat Any Animal That
Has Cloven Hooves and Chews Its Cud. Lev. 113
    Deut. 146.,
  • Pig, rabbit do not chew a cud.(treyf)
  • Of the things that are in the waters, you may eat
anything that has fins and scales. Lev. 119
    Deut. 149.
  • All of the birds on the forbidden list are birds
    of prey or scavengers

20
Preparation
  1. Cannot eat anything that dies of natural causes.
  2. Of the animals that may be eaten, the birds and
mammals must be killed in accordance with Jewish
    law.
  3. Blood drained, do not eat blood (Lev. 726-27
    Lev. 1710-14.).
  4. All blood must be drained from the meat or
broiled out of it before it is eaten.

21
Dietary Laws
  1. Separation of meat and dairy. Do not "boil a kid
in its mother's milk." (Ex. 2319 Ex. 3426
    Deut. 1421).
  2. Utensils that have come into contact with meat
may not be used with dairy, and vice versa.
  3. Utensils that have come into contact with
non-kosher food may not be used with kosher food.
This applies only where the contact occurred
    while the food was hot.

22
Separation of Meat and Dairy
  • One must wait a significant amount of time
between eating meat and dairy because meat and
fat stick to the mouth. Opinions differ, and vary
    from three to six hours.
  • From dairy to meat, however, one need only rinse
one's mouth and eat a neutral solid like bread,
unless the dairy product in question is also of a
type that tends to stick in the mouth.

23
Grape products made by non-Jews may not be
eaten.

ancient religions, and wine was routinely

What Do Catholics Believe
  • http//www.catholic.org/prayer/beliefs.html.
  • I. To gain the happiness of heaven we must know,
love, and serve God in this world. Man is raised
to the supernatural order only by grace, a free
    gift of God.
  • II. We learn to know, love, and serve God from
Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who teaches us
    through the Catholic Church.

52
What Do Catholics Believe
  • III. In order to be saved, all persons who have
attained the use of reason must believe
explicitly that God exist and that he rewards the
good and punishes the wicked in practice they
must also believe in the mysteries of the Blessed
    Trinity and the Incarnation.
  • IV. By the Blessed Trinity we mean one and the
same God in three divine persons, the Father, the
    Son, and the Holy Ghost.

53
What Do Catholics Believe
  • V. By the Incarnation is meant that the Son of
God, retaining His divine nature, took to Himself
a human nature, that is, a body and soul like
    ours.
  • VI. The Church is the congregation of all
baptized persons united in the same true faith,
the same sacrifice, and the same sacraments,
under the authority of the Sovereign Pontiff and
the bishops in communion with him.

What Do Protest ants Believe
  • 1) Justification by grace through faith.  We
    consider ourselves individually responsible to
God, and accordingly, freer to experience God's
grace.  This grace comes through Jesus Christ to
us as a gift, and cannot be bought, earned, or
    conveyed by clergy.

59
What Do Protest ants Believe
  • 2) Authority of the Bible.  We rely upon the
Bible as authoritative both in matters of faith
and as inspired by the Holy Spirit.  Nonetheless,
we respect the "right of private judgment," and
often don't agree on interpretation of the
    scripture.

60
What Do Protest ants Believe
  • 3) Universal priesthood of believers. We enlarge
the role of the laity, encourage individual study
and meditation, and reject the imposition of
other humans as mediators between us and God.
