Title: GOLF ON THE MOVE

1
GOLF ON THE MOVE!
  • A pedometer based exercise assessment of the
physical fitness benefits of golf when walking
    the golf course

2
THE PURPOSE
  • To evaluate the sport of golf as a relevant form
of physical fitness based on the amount of
walking done by both cart riding and walking to
aid in the achievement of 10,000 steps per day

3
WHY BOTHER?
  • Roughly 31 or about 59 million American adults
    meet the criterion for obesity.
  • About 65 of Americans are classified as either
    overweight or obese (Daniels 2006)
  • Less than one-fifth of U.S. adults engage in
    regular physical activity.

4
THE BENEFITS OF GOLF
  • Walking has been found to have several positive
effects on health and weight management.
  • Golf is a social and pleasurable form of activity
that includes long bouts of low to moderate
    intensity walking.
  • It will allow individuals to achieve a moderate
level of aerobic intensity while providing a low
    risk of injury.

5
Previous Research
  • Dobrosielski
  • Measured MET levels obtained on the golf course
when pulling a cart (4.5-8.7 METS)
  • Parkkari
  • Male golfers ages 48-64 who played golf 2-3 times
per week saw a reduction in body fat composition,
increases in HDL cholesterol levels, and a very
    low risk of injury
  • Stauch
  • Heart rate level during a round of golf not using
an electric cart reaches the exercise intensity
of 50 to greater than 85 heart rate max reserve
for a mean of over two hours

6
THE STUDY
  • 130 male golfers from three different golf
courses were asked to wear a pedometer as they
played 18 holes of golf either by walking or
    riding in a cart.

7
METHODS
  • Each golfer was approached prior to the first tee
with a consent form and a pedometer. If
consenting, the golfer was asked to verbally
state his height, weight, handicap, tee box
    color, and group size
  • He was fitted with a pedometer on the lead hip
and calibrated with 50 to 100 steps
  • Upon completion of the round, the pedometer was
    returned and recorded.

8
COURSE CALIBRATION
  • In order to accurately calculate the distance
from tee to tee to green, each course was GPS
mapped using data points specific to each hole.
  • This also helped to establish minimum walking and
    cart riding step distances

9
PATTY JEWETT (PJ)
  • Patty Jewett Golf Course is a public golf
    facility
  • Patty Jewett is a par 72 course, offering four
tee boxes per hole, and the course length ranges
from 5,998 yards (5,485 meters) for the forward
tees to over 6,948 yards (6,353 meters) for the
    back tees.

PATTY JEWETT (PJ)
11
PINE CREEK(PC)
  • Pine Creek Golf Club is a public golf facility on
the north end of Colorado Springs.
  • It is a par 72 course, offering four tee boxes
per hole, and the course length ranges from a
front-tee length of 5,314 yards (4,859 meters) to
over 7,194 yards (6,578 meters) for the
    professional tees.

12
PINE CREEK(PC)
13
COUNTRY CLUB OF COLORADO(CCC)
  • The Country Club of Colorado is a private/resort
course located in the southwest region of
    Colorado Springs.
  • It is a par 71 course, offering four tee boxes
per hole, and the course ranges from a front tee
length of 5,285 yards (4,833 meters) to a
championship tee length of 7,056 yards (6.452
    meters).

RESULTS
16
RESULTS II
17
WALKING VS. RIDING IN ALL 3 COURSES
  • Walkers took significantly more steps than their
    riding counterparts.

18
WALKING VS. RIDINGWITHIN THE 3 COURSES
  • Data for all three courses were combined, average
steps taken for WG and RG (/- 1 SD) were 13145,
    /- 1735 WG distance and 6619 /-1536 steps RG
    distance

19
THE CART RIDERS
  • The data indicate that the number of steps taken
while riding in a cart were greatest at the Pine
Creek Golf Course (PC) (6992 /- 1448), followed
by the Country Club of Colorado (CCC) (6147 /-
1879), and the least at Patty Jewett Golf Course
    (PJ) (6117, /- 1139).
  • NOT SIGNIFICANT F(2,71)3.109, Plt.05

20
SPCM CART RIDERS
  • SPCM were shown to be very similar between the 3
courses. Individual averages found the lowest
number of steps taken at CCC (0.83 /- 0.248),
increasing with PC (0.921 /- 0.216), and at the
highest level when riding at PJ (0.978 /-
    0.161).
  • NOT SIGNIFICANT F(2,71) 1.942, plt.05).

21
THE WALKERS
  • Similar walking steps between the 3 courses CCC
    (13424 /- 1298) PJ (12425 /- 1811) PC (14181
    /- 1394).
  • STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT F(2,53) 6.149,
    plt.05, F-Critical value of 3.17 (p-0.004).
  • Scheffes Follow up testing indicated
significance differences between PJ and PC
courses in regards to the number of S taken while
    playing a round.

22
SPCM WALKERS
  • SPCM showed more similarity between the 3 courses
    (1.9, /- 0.27).
  • A significant difference was seen between the CCC
and PC, and also between PJ and PC. There
appeared to be no significant when CCC and PJ
    were compared in step relation.

23
THE BAD NEWS
  • No statistically significant correlation was
found between Cart Steps and Handicap Cart Steps
and Height Walking Steps and Height or Walking
and Group Size. This proved true for all 3
    courses

24
CART STEPS HANDICAP
25
CART STEPS HEIGHT
26
WALKING STEPS HEIGHT
27
WALKING GROUP SIZE
28
THE GOOD NEWS
  • THE AVERAGE WALKER WEIGHED 6.1 KG LESS THAN THE
    AVERAGE CART RIDER!

29
CONCLUSION
  • The results of the study indicate that both modes
of transportation used while playing golf
(walking and riding in a cart) are successful at
helping individuals meet or exceed the
recommended goal of 10,000 steps per day
