CORANET TECHNOLOGY
  • Funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research
Quality (AHRQ) under SBIR- Phase I
  • US Patent Number 7,328,276
  • China Patent Number ZL 01820786.3
  • Canada Patent Pending
  • Platform used developed by the Los Alamos
    National Laboratory
  • Interoperable, real time electronic medical
    record

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TECHNOLOGY
  • CORAnet enables doctors and emergency medical
personnel to have immediate, secure and
patient-authorized access to medical files in
medical emergencies where currently lack of
    timely availability of information regarding
medical history of patient is a serious problem.
  • CORAnet makes patient medical files available to
the ER while the patient is being transported to
    the hospital

5
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TECHNOLOGY(CONT.)
  • CORAnet enables doctors to provide instructions
to paramedics or other personnel to conduct tests
or prepare the patient as appropriate before they
    arrive at the ER
  • CORAnet can easily be extended to non-emergency
health care, such as missing persons
    identification, disaster management and secure
    access scenarios.

6
KEY CONCEPTS BEHIND CORAnet TECHNOLOGY
  • Medical files are recorded in an electronic
format which can be stored in a small
password/fingerprint protected card carried by an
    individual
  • A platform independent software system that
    allows for password/fingerprint protected access
    of data on this card
  • Secure sharing of these files over the Internet
is enabled, as is access and update of these
files by medical personnel even when they are not
physically present at the scene of emergency.

7
OBJECTIVES OF THE TECHNOLOGY
  • Provide for efficient and timely availability of
    medical files during medical emergencies
especially when the patient is unconscious and/or
    unidentified
  • Provide a means for real-time online
communication and enable the sharing of medical
records and information between offsite doctors
and medical personnel attending to the patient
which allows for significantly better treatment
when the patient is not in the hospital

8
OBJECTIVES OF THE TECHNOLOGY(cont.)
  • Provide a means for consolidation of a persons
medical profile currently spread across different
specialists in compliance with emerging standards
    such as HL7, ASTM, HIPAA
  • Provide the ability to log events and
conversation among medical personnel attending to
a medical emergency, reducing risks of medical
errors and can be an asset in cases involving
    later legal or audit reviews

9
OBJECTIVES OF THE TECHNOLOGY(cont.)
  • Reduce healthcare costs electronic bookkeeping
of handwritten medical transcripts amounts to
over 30 of healthcare costs. CORAnets standard
    interface capabilities and consolidation of
medical files and record keeping profiles can
lead to significant savings in the area of
    medical record update and maintenance

10
BENEFICIARIES
  • Patients by allowing medical personnel
immediate access to their medical history, it
will significantly increase the patients chances
    of receiving appropriate medical treatment
  • Doctors by having immediate access to accurate
medical files, the number of assumptions made are
reduced when administering certain medications or
    recommending medical procedures

11
BENEFICIARIES(cont.)
  • Emergency off-site practitioners/medical
personnel - Offsite practitioners such as
paramedics will have immediate access to the
patients medical history and be able to perform
preliminary emergency tests while enroute to the
hospital, under the guidance of a doctor, who is
now well informed of the patients medical
    history.

12
BENEFICIARIES(cont.)
  • Private and Governmental Health Care
    Organizations Insurance Companies CORAnet
provides a platform for increasing efficiency in
handling medical files and service requests,
    promoting easier investigative processing for
    audits and claims

ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES
15
ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES
  • OPEN Emed
  • Wireless Web and Multimedia Technologies
  • Smart Devices/Microcontrollers and New
    Networking Technologies

16
Smart Devices Partial List
  • Radio Frequency Identification Device
  • GPS Technologies
  • Dallas 1-Networking
  • iButton Identification
  • Systronix JStamp
  • These can all be integrated into CORANET to
    provide
  • additional integrated software/hardware features
    for
  • the CORANET system

17
USE CASES - Assumptions
  • The assumptions in all the scenarios are the
    following
  •
  • The personnel involved have a basic familiarity
    with computers and the Internet.
  • All personnel/facilities have a computer with
associated hardware capable of loading the
CORALinks data card that contains medical
    records.
  • Not all personnel/facilities have access to
required hardware and software to read a
    patients fingerprint. When fingerprint reading
is not possible it is assumed that the patient is
conscious and can provide the emergency personnel
with the password to access his/her medical data

18
SCENARIOS
  • Scenario 1 A Medical Emergency where a skilled
medical practitioner (paramedic, nurse etc) in an
ambulance is attending to the patient and can
    contact an ER doctor.
  • Scenario 2 A Medical Emergency where a
    skilled/unskilled medical practitioner is
attending to the patient and can contact a
    doctor.
  • Scenario 3 A Medical Emergency where a
    doctor/skilled/unskilled medical practitioner is
attending to the patient. No ER Doctor is
    involved in this setting
  • Scenario 4 Office Consultation with a Doctor
