Title: Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome SARS

1
Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome(SARS)
2
What is it
  • Considered the deadly atypical pneumonia
  • Travels poorly through the air and only in large
drops that a coughing or sneezing person ejects
  • Also transmitted from contaminated objects

3
Where has it been found?
  • 18 countries as of April 2, 2003
  • The top countries with the most cases of
contamination are Canada (58), Vietnam (58),
United State (84), Singapore (95), ChinaHong
    Kong (708), and China (1,190)

5
Symptoms
  • Fever of 100.4 F
  • Muscle aches
  • Dry cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

6
In some cases, these symptoms are followed by
  • Low blood oxygen
  • Pneumonia
  • Occasional acute respiratory distress
  • death

7
Risk Factors
  • Recent travel to Hong Kong, Guangdong
    Province-China, Hanoi-Vietnam, Singapore,
    Toronto- Canada
  • Close contact with a person with respiratory
illness who is suspected of having SARS

8
Risk Factors cont
  • Close contact includes having cared for, lived
with, or had direct contact with respiratory
secretions or bodily fluids of a person with SARS
(casual contact is not likely to be a risk)

9
Bush ordered quarantine
  • On April 4, 2003 President Bush issued an
executive ordered Friday adding SARS to the list
of communicable disease for which a person can be
    quarantined

10
The Order
  • The order reads SARS, a disease first recognized
late last year in China, is associated with fever
and signs and symptoms of pneumonia or other
respiratory illness is transmitted from person to
person pre-dominantly by the aerosolized or
droplet route, and, if spread in the population,
    would have severe public consequences.

11
Treatment
  • Receive similar treatment as used for community
acquired atypical pneumonia of unknown cause
  • Treatments include steroids, antibiotics, and
    antiviral agents
  • The most effective treatment is unknown

12
Bio-terrorism
  • There have been questions raised about whether or
not SARS is related to bio-terrorism and there is
    no indication that it is
