Background

• Excessive alcohol consumption (e.g., underage and
  binge drinking) is related to a number of health
  and social problems that are addressed by CDC
  programs.
• Some CDC programs focus exclusively on alcohol
  issues (e.g., Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Prevention
  Team and Alcohol Team).
• Many CDC programs assess alcohol consumption as
  part of their other program activities.

• Increase awareness of alcohol as a public health
  problem.
• Provide a forum for exchanging information on
  alcohol and public health.
• Improve the usefulness of data systems for
  monitoring alcohol consumption.
• Identify research needs and support capacity
  building in states.
• Foster collaboration on alcohol projects across
  CDC programs

Inventory of CDC Alcohol Activities

• Initial survey to identify CDC Divisions that are
  addressing alcohol.
• Follow-up survey to more specifically
  characterize these alcohol activities.
• Help set priorities for the Interest Group.
• Complement the ICCPUD inventory of underage
  drinking activities.

Summary

• Alcohol is increasingly recognized as an
  important public health priority at CDC.
• Many CDC programs are currently involved in
  addressing alcohol to some extent.
• Alcohol activities at CDC tend to be diffuse and
  compartmentalized.
• Improved intra- and inter-agency collaboration is
  needed to facilitate the prevention of excessive
  alcohol consumption and related harms.
