Title: Stimulating "Electronic Thinking" in a Clinical Environment
1Stimulating "Electronic Thinking" in a Clinical
Environment
- By Michelle Heller, CMA, RMAMedical Assisting
Program Director at Ohio Institute of Health
Careers
2EMR VERSES EHR
- EMR (Electronic Medical Record) Electronic
record with full interoperability within an
enterprise (hospital, clinic, practice) - EHR (Electronic Health Record) Generic term for
all electronic patient care systems - The above definitions were provided by C. Peter
Waegemann, CEO of the Medical Records Institute
in an article entitled EHR vs. CPR vs. EMR in the
May 2003 issue of - Healthcare Informatics.
3ADVANTAGES OF USING EMR/EHR
4Better Patient Care
- Improved communication between healthcare
establishments and personnel working in those
establishments.
5Better Patient Care Continued
- Health maintenance improves because of better
tracking. - Lab tests can be measured and tracked for
statistical data and trends. - Fewer medication errors
- Quicker responses to patient queries.
6Improved Efficiency
- Documentation time is greatly reduced due to the
implementation of charting templates and auto
text functions - No longer have to spend time searching for
charts. - Electronic tasks are much more readily performed
than physical tasks.
7Increased Revenue
- Better coding because of charting templates and
auto text functions. - Better tracking of health maintenance procedures
results in increased revenue.
8THE GOVERNMENTS ROLE IN PROMOTING EMR
- President Bush and other governmental agencies
want all patients to have EMR by 2014 and are
currently creating incentives to private EMR
vendors for creating software that match the
standards set forth by the government.
9THE GOVERNMENTS ROLE IN PROMOTING EMR Cont.
- Incentives in Medicare and other HHS programs for
using EMR. - No licensing fee to use the governmental software
VistA, designed and used by the Department of
Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs. - Awarding grants to smaller medical offices that
may not be able to afford EMR.
10GOVERNMENTAL ACTS OR BILLS THAT ENCOURAGE THE
IMPLENTATION OF EMR
- 1996- HIPAA
- 2003 Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement
Modernization Act
11GOVERNMENTAL ACTS OR BILLS THAT ENCOURAGE THE
IMPLENTATION OF EMR Cont.
- 2004-Executive Order 13335 (Calls for complete
computerization of healthcare or a nationwide
interoperable health information technology
infrastructure by 2014.) - 2005-Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act
12PERCENTAGE OF PRACTICES USING EMR
- Between 2001 and 2003 around 15 of all practices
were using EMR. - (Stats are from the U.S. Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention National Center for
Health Statistics, National Ambulatory Medical
Care Survey, 2001-2003)
13PERCENTAGE OF PRACTICES USING EMR Cont.
- In the January 2005 issue of Medical Economics,
25 of physicians were cited as stating that they
were planning on adopting EMR in the next year.
14- HOW DO WE TEACH STUDENTS TO THINK ELECTRONICALLY
IN A CLINICAL ENVIRONMENT?
15Instructor Training
- Internet Resources
- EMR Companies
- (Provide Screen Shots, Explanations, Software
Demos) - Federal Websites
- Practice Management Websites
- Specialty Websites
16Instructor Training Cont.
- Attending EMR/EHR Workshops and Seminars
- EMR Companies
- Practice Management Companies
- Publishers
17Student Resources
- Textbooks that Implement EMR Training
- Adopt textbooks that incorporate EMR/EHR
training.
18Student Resources Cont.
- EMR Software Programs
- Usually bundled with the text
- EMR Assignments
- Research paper on an EMR article
- Research paper on an EMR software program.
19Student Resources Cont.
- Group assignment comparing at least two different
EMR software programs (Include costs and
functionalities.) - Have students interview someone working in an
office that has used both paper records and
electronic records and prepare an oral or written
presentation depicting their findings.
20Student Resources Cont.
- The Clinical Instructor is an Important Resource.
- Incorporate EMR training into both the lecture
and lab setting.
21Examples of Great EMR Websites

- Excellent website for screen demonstrations.
- Click on the blue box on the left that says
software. - Click on the Virtual Tour Tab
- Scroll through the virtual tour tab at the bottom
of the screen using the forward arrow until you
get to Additional Screen Captures

- Click on the demos tab that reads
- Misys EMR Demo Electronic Medical Records
- Select which demos you want to play.
24VistAÂ / CPRS Demo Site
- VistA Veterans Health Information Systems and
Technology Architecture - CPRS Computerized Patient Record System
- EHR software designed by governmental agencies.
- Considered a model for a national EHR system.
- There are no licensing fees for using VistA which
makes it very affordable.
