Welcome to the Norfolk Data Observatory (NDO),
this tutorial will navigate you through the
sites capabilities.

The user log in and registration is optional. By
becoming a registered user the NDO offers more
functionality by allowing you to save specific
geographic areas of interest within the advanced
Sections of the site. By registering you will
become part of the NDO user community.
4Quick Profiles

Enter postcode here
To quickly find out information about where you
live or for a brief overview of the data that is
held on the Norfolk Data Observatory (NDO), the
user is required to enter a postcode into the
quick profiles box (top right of the NDO
homepage).

Quick Profiles
After entering a postcode, the user is presented
with a list of areas, in which the postcode is
situated. Each geography navigates the user to a
General profile.

Quick Profiles gt District
After selecting the geographic area of interest,
the user is navigated to a General Profile. This
profile details a broad range of indicators which
provide an overview of the information that is
located on the NDO.

Most sections of the General profile (e.g.
Population) contain a view a related profile
link. This link will navigate the user to a more
detailed profile for the particular information
of interest.

Explorer
The Explorer section allows the user to locate
datasets and indicators, including documents and
web links. It delivers 'metadata' i.e. data about
data.

Choose your Search criteria
To use the Explorer section, the user is required
to select a keyword as the search criteria. This
should be followed by selecting either search
all resources, search data resources or
search document resources only.

The Explorer results provide the Datasets and
indicators for the search criteria. It details
the Area Types the data is available at, the
Profiles and Data Views the indicators are
situated within, and any documents or web
resources. Each link is live and provides
metadata.

Profiles
The Profiles section allows the user to quickly
produce a summary area profile for an area of
interest. The profiles provide key
characteristics of areas and contain text,
detailed tables and charts.

The user is required to select a specific
geographic area (e.g. Districts), Theme (e.g.
Crime) and profile (e.g. notifiable offences
recorded by the police).

profile. A map of the selected area is present,
along with live links detailing the sections of
the profile.

The data is presented in tables comparing the

Adv. Profiles
The Advanced Profiles section offers more
functionality than Profiles by allowing the
user to select multiple areas and the ability to
customise comparison areas.

Save custom geography
The user has the ability to select multiple
areas. If the user has registered and is logged
into the NDO they will be able to create and save
custom areas. For example the user could group
together the wards in Thetford and save them as
their own custom geography. If the user is not
registered or logged in, the custom area
selection options will not be visible.

The user has the ability to customise comparison
areas (maximum of four values). For example the
user could deselect the default East of England
and England and select the district values for
Breckland, Broadland, and Great Yarmouth.

The advanced profile produces an aggregated
report for the multiple areas selected in step 3.

The advanced profile tables provide aggregated
results for the selected areas, displaying the
custom comparison geographies selected in
Advanced profiles step 6. Please note that data
may not always be available for comparison values.

Selected areas
The advanced profile allows the user to
disaggregate their profile by clicking one of
the selected areas (chosen in step 3). The
profile can easily be re-aggregated by selecting
the aggregated function situated above the
selected areas.

The Data Views section allows the user to explore
and investigate key pre-defined sets of data
using an exciting combination of interactive maps
and charts.

Start selecting Data View
The Data Views section can be displayed either as
a table view or within an interactive
atlas. Please note that to view the interactive
atlases Adobe Flash Player (ver.8 or higher) is
required. If you need to install the free Adobe
Flash Player 'plug-in' then you can download it
from the Adobe web site - www.adobe.com.

The user has the ability to select a theme or
search by keyword of interest. The user can
then select the view by clicking the desired icon
of the data view and area type required.

The table view allows the user to view the
indicators assigned to each data view in a table
format. The user can add or remove indicators
from the table and has the ability to export the
desired results as a Comma Separated Value (CSV)
or XML file.

The Single Map allows the user to explore a
single indicator across multiple geographies. It
is the only atlas which provides the user with a
Time Series Chart. All atlases are fully
Interactive, for example by selecting the
district of Great Yarmouth (GY) on the map, GY
is highlighted within the table and bar chart and
a time series for GY becomes available. The
user has the ability to select Comparison Areas.

The Double Map allows the user to compare two
indicators across multiple geographies. It is
the only atlas to display a Scatterplot graph
providing the correlation between the data

Add Comparison Areas
The Area profile allows the user to profile a
range of indicators comparing these area by
area. A filter option is available, for example
the user can filter down from County level to
only view the LSOAs situated within the District
of Great Yarmouth. Please note that the filter
option Is available with all atlases but only for
certain geography types.

The Advanced Data Views section allows the user
to create custom tables comprising any
indicators held in the system. The user can then
view the data as a Data View, export the data or
create custom maps and charts which the user can
use in their own presentations and reports.
