- This workshop is for those individuals and/or
organizations that may be interested in
participating in a Safe Kids chapter in their
local community.
3Mission Statement for Safe Kids
Vanderburgh/Warrick
- Safe Kids Vanderburgh/Warrick is a local network
of organizations whose purpose is to prevent
accidental childhood injury through education and
increased awareness.
4UNINTENTIONAL CHILDHOOD INJURYTHE PROBLEM
- Each Year
- 6,040 children die
- 92,000 children permanently
- disabled
- 14 million children injured
Trauma is the FIRST leading cause of death in
ages 1-44
5Injury Prevention
- There is no such thing as an accident.
- Dr. Waller advocated for the removal of the term
accident. - Injuries CAN be explained with scientific methods.

15Safe Kids Chapter Requirements
- Must have at least two other agencies in the
community as members of the local Safe Kids
chapter - Designate and perform at least two areas of
safety/injury prevention for families, children - Hold monthly/bimonthly meetings to discuss Safe
Kids chapter business - Maintain awareness of public policy on safety
issues - Collect data where feasible
- Solicit/Obtain external funding or in-kind
donations from local businesses, community
foundations, and individuals
16Benefits of being a Safe Kids chapter affiliated
through Safe Kids Indiana
- 1500 Traffic Safety grant every October 1 of
current grant year through Safe Kids Indiana.
This grant can be used to purchase traffic safety
items such as car seats, booster seats, bike
helmets, etc. - Various free/low cost safety materials throughout
year from Safe Kids Indiana (helmets, safety
brochures, smoke detectors) as available. - General Motors/Chevrolet Safe Kids Buckle Up
Incentive grants (400-800) for car seat
inspections, trainings, etc. On a first come,
first come basis while supplies last. Safe Kids
Buckle Up grants are on a quarterly basis. - National affiliation with Safe Kids Worldwide.
- Discounted child passenger safety trainings and
injury prevention seminars. - Access to the General Motors Chevy Venture Mobile
Car Seat Check Up Van for community events (i.e.
health fair, festival, car seat check). - Constant communication link with State
Coordinator through toll-free line.
