Title: Enhancing Education Through Technology Grant

1
Enhancing Education Through Technology Grant
  • Western Sussex Technology Consortium (WeST)

2
Grant Parameters
  • A consortium has to be formed with three
districts (Delmar, Laurel, Seaford decided to
    partner)
  • The grant has to create resources for the
Delaware Recommended Curriculum which is designed
to bridge the gaps between the new Grade Level
Expectations (ELA and Math) and the DSTP
    assessments.

3
Grant Parameters
  • Sixty Six teachers will be recruited from the
    three school districts.
  • Teachers will work in groups of two or three to
create an Understanding by Design unit of study
    in either ELA or math.
  • The units will be created this spring during
training sessions. They will be reviewed in
early summer and the teams will revise the units
    by August 1.
  • The teachers will implement the units next year
and then make final revisions of the unit by June
    1, 2007

4
what is Understanding by Design
  • This is a model for unit design created by Grant
    Wiggins and Jay McTighe
  • Step 1-what are the desired results
  • Step 2-what assessments will be used to measure
    student understanding
  • Step 3-what learning plan or activities and tasks
will student complete to master the content,
    skills and knowledge

but I thought this was a technology grant
  • Each unit will integrate some form of technology
    into it.
  • During the workshops this spring, teachers will
go through Levels of Technology Integration
    (LoTi) training and technology training.
  • The districts will order the technology over the
summer for use during the unit implementation
phase. It is advised that teachers create a unit
that will be taught during the 2nd, 3rd or 4th
    marking periods.

6
what is in it for me?
  • Participants will receive an 800 stipend. (400
paid in August 2006 and 400 June 2007)
  • The stipend covers all expenses and meetings
required. That includes meals, travel expenses
and 8 hours of after school workshops next year.
  • Participants will also earn some technology for
    their districts and schools.

7
what technology is planned for Seaford?
  • During the faculty meeting presentations in
    November, teachers indicated several technologies
    they desired.
  • Based upon those results, each school will
    receive four multimedia projection systems.
Combined with some other systems being purchased,
this will provide each school with a minimum of
one system per grade level. Each system will
include a projection system, cart, computer,
document camera and portable white board
    (Interwrite panel).

8
what technology is planned for Seaford?
  • These teaching systems will allow teachers to
project Internet sites, teach via PowerPoint,
display maps, books and 3-D objects.
  • One class set of handheld computers per school.
  • Wireless access points to create wireless
    environment.
  • We will try hard to replace the laptop systems
    from other funds next year.

9
when is the training?
  • Your team will select a training site and will
commit to attend the four days of training at
    that site.
  • 3 of the training dates will focus on creating
the UbD unit. Most teams will have their unit
completed by the end of the 4th session.
  • 1 day will be devoted to technology training and
LoTi training. The idea is to focus on how to
    integrate technology into the classroom.

10
when is the training?
11
what are the next steps?
  • Decide on your teams
  • Decide on a set of training dates (random draw in
    Seaford)
  • Complete the contract
  • Begin to order your substitutes following your
    districts procedures
  • You will receive an e-mail confirmation from Marc
Dickerson (Seaford) who will be coordinating the
training sessions. He will also create a web
site to support the project for the next 16
    months with the training materials.
