Joseph P. Mohorovic
  • International Leaders Summit
  • Zagreb, Croatia
  • November 6, 2004

2
Mohorovicic Background
  • Grandfathers Grandfathers brother was Andrija
Mohorovicic, father of the geologist Dr. Andrija
    Mohorovicic, of Mohorovicic Discontinuity and
    Moho fame.
  • Grandfather, Joseph Mohorovicic was Senior
Counsel to Ban Ivan Subasic of the Croatian
government in exile. Grandfather was born in
small villiage of Rukavac, north of Opatija.
    Subasic was my fathers godfather.
  • Grandfather Joseph was called by Subasic to
America to serve as secretary and advisor in
1941. Subasic was called to London in 1942 and
my grandfather went with him. King Peters
government was in London under British
    protection.

Mohorovicic Background (continued)
  • My father, Jesse, born in lifeboat off coast of
Virginia in 1942. In his early professional
career, my father, Jesse, dropped the second ic
from his surname which is why I am Joseph
    Mohorovic (not Mohorovicic).
  • 1944 Ban Subasic was asked by Churchill to meet
with Tito to form the framework for a post war
government to include Serbian King Peter
    contingent upon free elections.

4
Mohorovicic Background (continued)
  • This accomplished, Subasic and Mohorovicic
returned to the U.S. in 1945 in order to attend
the San Francisco conference establishing the
United Nations. Both Ban Subasic and Joseph
Mohorovicic signed the United Nations Charter on
    Jugoslavias behalf.
  • With the War over, Ban Subasic returned to
Jugoslavia to participate in free elections as
part of a Constitutional Monarchy. My
grandfather was skeptical of the situation and,
    instead, stayed in America.

5
Representative-Elect 1998
  • Many parallels between situation in New Mexico in
    1998 and Croatia.
  • Congressman Gingrichs conversation with Ronald
    Reagan.
  • Our task reverse 65 years of collectivist policy
    in New Mexico.

6
Drafting a Plan
  • This is not a game for summer soldiers. Thomas
    Paine
  • 4 Goals
  • Establish our vision
  • Rebuild our party in New Mexico
  • Arouse business and professionals
  • Define our opponents

7
Establish a Vision
  • Paint a picture of a gloriously different New
    Mexico.
  • Behave every day as people who believe this is
about New Mexicos future and our childrens
    future.
  • Believe that this is about the future of freedom.

8
Rebuild Our Institutions
  • Somehow we successfully avoided majority status
    for over 70 years! Why?
  • We had the wrong culture in our party.
  • Leadership attacking our Governor
  • Siding with opponents in local elections
  • Letters in support of opponents leadership
  • Draw distinction and continue in an active
    leadership role.

9
Arouse and Awaken the Productive
  • If you are productive you should keep your mouth
    shut.
  • Meanwhile, people who are unproductive
  • raise your taxes,
  • sue you in court,
  • Humiliate you in their classrooms, and
  • Criticize you in the editorials you pay for by
buying the advertisements which pay for their
    salaries!

10
Arouse and Awaken the Productive
  • What if we actually spent more time talking to
    the people who create jobs?
  • Why call the same liberal professors
  • Who wrote the bills,
  • Who got us in the mess,
  • To tell us why the mess they got us in isnt
    really bad?

11
Define the Status Quo and Provide an Alternative
  • People in my state knew the situation was dismal.
  • People in my state knew that collectivist,
    liberal policy had failed them.
  • What they did not see was a product line to
deliver to them a better future.

12
Demonstrate a Clear Contrast
  • Our Vision
  • Replace subsidies and quotas with incentives
  • Restore people to citizenship for a better future
  • Strengthen work, family, entrepreneurship,
    technology, safety, individual opportunity and
    local control
  • We believe in free markets, private property,
    lower taxes and smaller government
  • Their Vision
  • Big government
  • Big bureaucracy
  • Big taxes
  • Big unions
  • Quotas
  • Counterculture weak on crime
  • Weak on individual rights

13
Describe Two Different Worlds
  • We believe in less bureaucracy, less spending,
    for a smaller government
  • So we can lower taxes for parents
  • So they can keep the money they earn to take care
    of their children
  • The establishment wants higher taxes for a bigger
    government
  • So the bureaucrat can spend on your child what
    you cant afford to spend
  • Because you had to pay the taxes in order to take
    care of the bureaucrat
  • Who can then spend the money on your child what
    you cant afford to spend!

14
To sum it up
  • We believe you should earn more,
  • And keep more,
  • So you can have the freedom to do more!
