• Welcome to the world of punching! Punches are
  exciting tools that cut shapes from paper. In
  this class, you will learn how to maintain your
  punches, adhere punched pieces, create dimension
  with punched images, enhance punched pieces, and
  incorporate punched creations on your scrapbook
  pages.

Punch Maintenance

• Punch aluminum foil several times to remove metal
  burrs that can make a punch sticky.
• Lubricate punches by punching waxed paper.
• After sharpening and lubricating your punches,
  you will find that they will punch with a nice
  clean edge.

Adhering Punched Pieces

• When working with punches, you will find that you
  are frequently dealing with very small punched
  pieces.
• If you attempt to put glue on the tiny pieces,
  you will end up with very sticky fingers!
• A better method is to apply glue to the
  foundation piece, which is your largest surface.
• With craft tweezers, pick up the tiny punched
  pieces and lay them into the glue. This keeps
  your hands clean and makes punch assembly a
  little easier.

• All of the punch projects in this class reflect
  an element of a scrapbook page.
• You will create titles, borders, journal boxes,
  photo mats, and page accents with punches.
• Draw inspiration from these unique projects to
  incorporate punched concepts in your layouts.
• Use these ideas to stretch your creativity and
  add a punch of interest to your scrapbook pages!

Positive and Negative

• Punches create positive and negative images when
  they punch through paper.
• The positive image is the resulting punched
  piece.
• The negative image is the empty space left in the
  paper.
• Both the positive and negative images can be used
  in punch art.
• Accent journal boxes, titles, and photos with
  these fun punched pieces.

• Step 1 Adhere the Build-a-Page Tulip Stripe
  green rectangle to the large white rectangle.

• Step 2 Punch 3 squares from the Build-a-Page
  Orange Wash square with the Whale of a Punch
  Square punch.
• Punch a small Daisy shape in the corner of just
  two of the orange squares.

• Step 3 Arrange the three square shapes as shown
  on the strip of white cardstock.
• Adhere the matted strip to the bottom of the
  Tulip Stripe green rectangle.

• Step 4 Punch a large Daisy shape from the Yellow
  Wash square with the Whale of a Punch Daisy
  punch.
• Chalk the edges of the large Daisy shape using
  the orange Chalklets.
• Punch a small Daisy shape from the orange scrap,
  and adhere it in the center of the large Daisy
  shape.
• Place a large 3D-Dots foam adhesive circle on
  the back of the large Daisy shape and adhere it
  to the center orange square.

• Step 5 Chalk the edges of the Yellow Wash
  rectangle using the orange Chalklets.
• Adhere the Yellow Wash rectangle to the top of
  the Tulip Stripe green rectangle.
• Write Journal Here with a black Millennium 05
  marker.

Print and Punch

• Punches are available in tons of sizes and
  shapes.
• Look for punches that reflect the theme and mood
  of your page, then add them to your titles!
• Simply write your message on cardstock, giving
  yourself some extra spacing in the word, then
  punch the letters out with the selected shape.
• Combine shapes and sizes for added interest.

• Step 1 Tear the top and bottom edges of the
  Build-a-Page First Fall rectangle to fit within
  the largest scarlet rectangle.
• Using the Cutterpede, trim one side of the
  Build-a-Page First Fall rectangle to fit within
  the largest scarlet rectangle.

• Step 2 Write the letters F-A-L-L (leaving
  space in between) with a black Millennium 05
  marker along the edge of the pumpkin square.
• Randomly punch around the letters with the Stem
  Leaf shape punch.
• Chalk the edges of the Stem Leaf shape with brown
  Chalklets.
• Adhere the letters to the smallest scarlet
  rectangle.

• Step 3 Create a double mat for the FALL punched
  lettering box by adhering the pumpkin rectangle
  inside the medium scarlet rectangle.
• Adhere the FALL lettering box flush to the right
  of the double mat.
• Adhere the double matted FALL lettering box to
  the lower part of the decorative paper rectangle.

• Step 4 Punch 3 medium Bare Tree shapes from the
  large scarlet rectangle, and adhere each across
  the top portion of the double matted FALL
  lettering box.

Line em Up

• In the same way that a frame complements a
  picture, a border can enhance and complete a
  scrapbook page.
• Borders can simply adorn one side of a page, or
  they can act as a frame.
• However you choose to use border accents, it is
  important to keep balance in mind.
• Pull elements from the border design, and place
  them throughout the page in order to keep a
  balanced layout design.
• The best borders enhance the whole design by
  repeating elements from the border in the page.

• Step 1 Adhere the Build-a-Page Sky Blue Wash
  rectangles inside the Build-a-Page Blue Jean
  Wash rectangles.

• Step 2 Punch 9 Grass shapes from the
  Build-a-Page Grass Green Wash square and 6 Grass
  shapes from the Build-a-Page Meadow Green Wash
  square.
• Adhere the Grass shapes, alternating the colors,
  along the bottom of each of the 3 matted Sky Blue
  Wash rectangles.

• Step 3 Punch 3 Dragonfly shapes from the
  Build-a-Page Yellow Wash square, and adhere one
  to each rectangle as shown.
• Draw dotted flying motion lines between the
  dragonflies with a black Millennium 05 marker to
  visually connect all 3 rectangles.

Layer Punches

• Combine and layer punches for added depth and
  dimension on page accent pieces and punched
  images.
• Punch shapes from all your paper scraps including
  printed papers, which give your shapes more
  dimension and character.
• Remember that using only solid papers can result
  in flat-looking punch designs.

• Step 1 Cut a plank of wood lengthwise from the
  Build-a-Page Wooden Boards rectangle. Set this
  piece aside as the foundation for the floral swag.

  Meadow Green Wash square and 3 Oak leaves from
  Build-a-Page Grass Green Wash square. Punch 6
  Daisy shapes from Build-a-Page Yellow Wash

  Build-a-Page Orange Wash square.

• Step 3 Using the Wood Boards plank as the
  foundation, begin building the first layer of
  leaves by placing the lighter green Oak leaves as
  shown below.

• Glue the tiny orange circles to the center of

  and Purple Specks squares of decorative paper.

• Step 3 Make a layered snowflake by adhering the
  Purple Specks snowflake on top of the Blue Specks
  snowflake.
• Place a small 3D-Dots foam adhesive behind the
  layered snowflake, and adhere it in the center of
  the matted square.

Custom Punched Tags

• Tags are such fun to use on scrapbook pages. With
  a tag punch, you can create custom tags to match
  a layout.
• Apply enhancement tags to titles, photos and
  journaling, or simply use them as accents.
• Be creative, and make tags slip in and out of
  envelopes to convey a secret message. Go one step
  further and embellish tags with Adornaments
  fibers and Paper Shapers punches.

Custom Punched Tags

• Step 1 Punch 2 Tag shapes each from the
  Build-a-Page Pink, Sky Blue, and Yellow Wash
  color squares using the Whale of a Punch Tag
  punch.

• Step 2 Tear one of each color Tag in half
  lengthwise.
• Adhere half the pink tag on the blue tag, half
  the yellow tag on the pink tag, and half the blue
  tag on the yellow tag.
• Punch a hole in the top of each tag using the
  Tiny (3/16) Circle punch. Tie a 6 piece of the
  white Adornaments fiber to each of the tags.

• Step 3 Punch a different Paper Shapers Flower
  shape from each of the three color scraps.
• Adhere a Flower shape in the center of each tag.
• Punch a Tiny Circle shape from each of the three
  scrap wash colors.
• Adhere a Tiny Circle shape in the center of each
  of the flowers.

• Step 4 Adhere the tags to the Over The Moon
  Press vellum April Showers rectangle.
• Place adhesive on the back of the vellum
  rectangle behind each of the tags and, adhere it
  to the Build-a-Page Sky Blue Wash rectangle.
• Chalk the edge of the completed piece with blue
  Chalklets.

Adorn the Corners

• Punches are capable of decorating many elements
  on a scrapbook page.
• One of the most unique applications of a punched
  image is on corners.
• Use a decorative punch to adorn the corners of a
  page, photo mat, journal box, page accent or
  title.
• The universal application of this technique can
  give a page a lacy look, heritage appeal, or
  whimsical theme.

• Step 1 Punch the four corners of the
  Build-a-Page Yellow Wash rectangle with the
  Simplicity Paper Shapers Slot/Vellum Friendly
  Corner Adorner punch. Take care to place the
  corner of the paper squarely into the punch clip.

• Step 2 Slide the corners of the photo into the
  slots created by the Simplicity punch.
• The Build-a-Page Sunflowers Vellum rectangle has
  a cut-out window that will expose the focus of
  the photo.
• Slide the corners of the vellum rectangle into
  the corner slots, over the photo, exposing the
  face of the little girl.

• Step 3 Center and adhere the Yellow Wash
  rectangle on the Build-a-Page Ivy Leaves
  rectangle.
