Safety Week at New Germany Elementary
5
Safe Surfing Week
  • Educators always try to focus on safety issues
surrounding students. Just as a teen learns to
drive before getting a license, a child needs to
learn the rules of surfing the net before
    engaging in this activity.

6
  • Realizing that we had taken our initial one-week
educational tool from last spring and developed
it into a full school-wide program, we decided to
    gauge its success.

7
  • Our committee, along with the student body,
developed a survey to be used with students.
  • Parents and our community were surveyed.
  • Using technology we then compared the results
    using graphs.

8
  • The committee members involved their students in
    producing additional teaching tools.

9
  • One group wrote and performed skits, another
became computer buddies with a younger class, and
a third used puppets to take the message to the
    youngest classes.

10
  • The final group was responsible for developing a
powerpoint presentation to be used both now and
    in the future.

11
  • We began putting the information on our school
    web site.
  • A plan was developed to visit neighboring schools
next fall in order to get the message out to
    other students.

12
Planning and Involvement
  • A committee was already in place as we had
previously developed a program for our school and
    community.

13
  • Four teachers, with support from our
administrator, began the task of organizing what
we were currently doing as well as deciding what
additional things we could do to educate others.

14
  • Brainstorming is a wonderful tool. It was decided
that the program would actively involve the four
classes and target all ten classrooms at our
    school.

15
  • We would also reach out to parents, the
surrounding community and our online community.

16
Student Participation
  • All students participated
  • Students began tallying survey results and made
    graphs with technology.
  • New Germany Elementary students were impacted by
skits, puppet shows, the power point
presentation, and the computer buddy program.

17
Parents and Community
  • The grade five/six class conducted a phone survey
of families within our school to ask three very
    important questions
  • 1. Do you have internet at home?
  • 2. Is your computer in a high traffic area in
    your home?
  • 3. Do you have a set of rules for internet use in
    your home?
  • Parents were also asked if they use the internet
for emails, work/research. chat rooms and games.

18
Creative Education and Online Safety
  • Computer Buddies
  • Surveyed our school population
  • Phone survey to families of NGES student
  • Compiled surveys using graphs and technology
  • Used survey information to develop further
teaching tools such as skits and jingles.

19
  • Developed a power point to show students and
    staff the results
  • Wrote a puppet show and performed it for younger
    classes.
  • Decided to visit neighboring schools (with our
skits and puppet shows) in the fall to encourage
    them to teach online safety.
  • Developed a handout to send to parents
  • Began putting our Safe Surfing Week information
    on our school web-site.

20
Safety Facts and Outcomes
  • This program allowed our students to review
on-line safety facts that were taught during the
school year. The surveys demonstrated that our
    program is working.

21
  • The students practiced telephone manners while
doing the phone survey and covered a wide range
of Math outcomes while working on surveys for
    both schools.

22
  • The children used Language Arts components
(reading, writing, listening and speaking) when
preparing the survey and while speaking to the
    classes.

23
  • The buddy system has been used for years with the
reading component of Language Arts so the idea of
computer buddies was a natural move.

24
  • The grade one students gained valuable knowledge
about Safe Surfing while working with their older
    peers.
  • This Safe Surfing Week was really a culmination
of a full year of teaching students about how to
protect themselves when surfing the web.

Safety First
  • Narrator One night Isabelle was chatting to
Julie. All of a sudden a new chat window popped
up. The girls name was Theresa. She said she was
Isabelles new neighbour from the next street.
Theresa invited Isabelle to the park the next day.

47
  • Theresa Isabelle, would you like to go to the
    park tomorrow?
  • Isabelle Sure! That sounds like fun. What time?
  • Theresa Early. Before school.
  • Isabelle Okay.

48
  • Narrator As Isabelle got ready for school the
next morning she decided to mention to her mom
that she was meeting Theresa at the park before
school. After Isabelle left for the park her mom
decided something didnt sound right. She phoned
the police. Meanwhileas Isabelle walked to the
    park a policeman drove by.

49
  • Policeman My name is Constable DeLong. Your
mother phoned us and it was not a new neighbour
you were meeting. It was a nasty man named Bob
and he could have hurt you. Fortunately, we
caught him and hes in jail. From now on you need
to be more careful. However, you made the right
decision when you told your mother. Please DO NOT
chat online with people you do not know.

50
  • Narrator Isabelle learned a lesson and hopefully
    you did as well.

51
  Internet Safety Dialogue
  • Mandy Man, what a dull daywish I had something
really super to do. I know what Ill do. Im
going on-line. Hey! (looks offstage) Here comes
Joey. (calls offstage) Hey, Joey, Im glad to
see you. Hurry on over here cause I need your
    help.

52
  • Joey What kind of help do you need?
  • Mandy I need help with this computer.
Somethings wrong and I cant get into the chat
room to talk to this really cool guy.

53
  • Joey Whos the guy?
  • Mandy Ive been talking to him for a while now.
We have so much in common. We both like to play
    sports and go to movies.

54
  • Joey Neat. How old is he?
  • Mandy Hes my age. We are both twelve and hes
in grade six just like me.

55
  • Joey Where does he live?
  • Mandy Thats the best part. He lives really
close. We are going to the cinema on Saturday
    afternoon.

56
  • Joey Im surprised your Mom and Dad agreed to
    that.
  • Mandy They didnt.
  • Joey What do you mean?
  • Mandy I didnt tell them. Mom thinks Im meeting
    you at the cinema.

57
  • Joey For an intelligent girl you can be so
    foolish.
  • Mandy What do YOU mean?

58
  • Joey What if the guy is like thirty or
something. Please tell me you did not give him
    any personal information.

59
  • Mandy I was going to do that today. I guess I
wasnt thinking about Internet safety and the
rules we learned at school. You are such a great
    friend. Thanks!

60
  • Joey Not a problem. But hey, maybe we can shoot
hoops on Saturday. What do you say?
  • Mandy Sounds like a plan. Thanks!

61
Gaming Violence
  • Narrator Dallas was in his room opening emails.
There was a strange email in his box from an
unknown web site that forwarded a link to another
site where he could download a game for free.
  • Dallas Cool! Free games!

62
  • Narrator He went to a site and downloaded a game
called Killbunny 4. He anxiously opened the
    game and started to play.
  • Dallas Lets play.

63
  • Narrator The object of this game is to destroy
the world, one person at a time, by means of
extreme violence. Dallas didnt like the game so
he told his mom about it. The site was reported
and the creator of the game was investigated and
eventually arrested. Dallas did the right thing.
He told everyone in hopes of making people more
    aware of gaming violence.
