3Bacons RebellionThe Burning of Jamestown
Bacon's militia turned on the colonial capitol of
Jamestown seizing and destroying property of the
wealthy for three months. Bacons rebellion
showed that whites and blacks could unite in a
cause. This created the transition to racial
slavery.

preaching truth to all she met. - Spoke in Akron, Ohio at second annual convention
of the Women of Ohio, a suffrage organization. - Spoke of human freedom

- John Brown

- Fanatical abolitionist
- Was known for attacking slaveowners and for
assisting runaways - Lived in Akron, Ohio and many supported his
efforts - Received rifles from Tallmadge, Ohio used at
Harpers Ferry Rebellion - Home of John Brown 1859 and 2004 (pictured left)
6John Brown Harpers Ferry Rebellion 1859
On Sunday, October 16, 1859 17 white men and 5
Negroes took possession of a government building
at Harpers Ferry. The rebellion was meant to
touch off a general slave rebellion in the South.

John Brown and many of his followers were
captured and found guilty of treason and
sentenced to be hanged on December 2, 1859.

From 1936 to 1938, over 2,300 former slaves from
across the American South were interviewed by
writers and journalists.

"My paw's name was Tom Vaughn and he was from the
north, born free man and lived and died free to
the end of his days. He wasn't no eddicated man,
but he was what he calls himself a piano man He
said some white folks from the south told he if
he'd come with them to the south he'd find a lot
of work to do with pianos in them parts, and he
come off with them. "He saw my maw on the
Kilpatrick place and her man was dead. He told
Dr. Kilpatrick, my massa, he'd buy my maw and her
three chillun with all the money he had, iffen
he'd sell her. But Dr. Kilpatrick was never one
to sell any but the old niggers who was part
workin' in the fields and past their breedin'
times. So my paw marries my maw and works the
fields, same as any other nigger.

I was thirty-one years ole when de surrender
come. Dat makes me sho nuff ole. Near about a
hundres an three years done passed over dis here
white head of mine. Ise been here, I mean Ise
been here. Spects Ise de oldest nigger in
Durham. Is been here so long dat I done forgot
near bout as much as dese here new generation
knows or ever gwine know.

She told of her happy life before the Civil
War. Missy, peoples dont live now, and niggers
aint got no manners, and dont know nothin
about waitin on white folks. I kin remember de
days when I was one of de house servants. Dere
was six of us in de ol marsters house. Us
didnt know nothin but good times den.
13Richard Toler 1836 - 1838 (?) Ohio
"Ah never had no good times till ah was free",
the old man continued. "Ah was bo'n on Mastah
Tolah's (Henry Toler) plantation down in ole
V'ginia, near Lynchburg in Campbell County. Mah
pappy was a slave befo' me, and mah mammy, too.
His name was George Washington Tolah, and her'n
was Lucy Tolah. We took ouah name from ouah
ownah, and we lived in a cabin way back of the
big house, me and mah pappy and mammy and two
brothahs.

15Fountain Hughes Virginia 1848
Fountain Hughes was born on May 16, 1848. Both of
his parents were slaves. He remembered the Civil
War but commented that When the war was over we
had nothing. My mother didnt even have a bed to
sleep on.
16Walter Calloway 1848 (?) Alabama
Well, Sir, Capn, I was born in Richmond,
Virginny, in 1848. Befor I was ole nuff to
member much, my mammy wid me an my older
brudder was sold to Marsse John Calloway at
Snodoun in Montgomery County, ten miles south of
de town of Montgomery.
17Emma Crockett 1848 (?) Alabama
Miss, Im bout sebenty-nine or eighty year old
and I belonged to Marse Bills Hawkins and Miss
Betty. I lived on deir plantation right over
yander. My mammy was called Cassie Hawkins and my
pappy was Alfred Jolly. I was Emma Jolly fore I
married Old Henry Crockett. Us had five chillun
and deys two of em livin in Bummingham, Fannie
and Mary.

19Darling Nelly Gray is another example of a song
remembered by a former slave.
20Ben Horry 1850 (?) South Carolina
Time o the war the colored people hear bout
Yankee. Not a one eber understand to run way and
go to Yankee boat from WE plantation. These
Yankee people wuz walkin bout on the beach
21Clayton Holbert 1851 (?) Kansas
My name is Clayton Holbert, and I am an
ex-slave. I am eighty-six years old. I was born
and raised in Linn County, Tennessee. My masters
name was Pleasant Ples Holbert. My master had a
fairly large plantation he had, I imagine,
around one hundred slaves.
