  • Equipment is easy to use very effective
  • Readily accessible

11
Public Access Defibrillation
  • What is it?
  • 3rd component of the Chain of Survival

Advanced Care
12
Public Access Defibrillation
  • How will it affect our community?
  • Save Lives
  • Employees, clients, visitors will have a better
chance of surviving a cardiac arrest as a result
    of AEDs
  • Increase Awareness
  • Decrease time to effective treatment

13
Why Do We Advocate AEDs?
  • Public Access Defibrillation Saves Lives
  • Improves chances for survival due to Sudden
    Cardiac Arrest
  • Proven track record
  • American Airlines
  • Delta Airlines

14
Extent of the Problem
  • 1.1 million heart attacks
  • 480,000 deaths due tocoronary heart disease
  • 95 of sudden cardiac arrest victims die before
    reaching the hospital
  • Over 300 cardiac related deaths have occurred in
the Greater Williamsburg area since 2001

15
AEDs and Ventricular Fibrillation
  • VF is the most frequent initial rhythm in sudden
    cardiac arrest
  • VF is a useless quivering of the heart that
    results in no blood flow
  • Defibrillation is the only effective treatment
    for VF
  • Successful electrical defibrillation diminishes
    rapidly over time

16
Time and AEDs
  • Survival reduced by 10 each minute
  • i.e., 50 survival after 5 minutes
  • Rapid defibrillation is key
  • CPR helps extend survival time

Questions to Answer before Calling 911

  • Could the condition get worse and become
life-threatening on the way to the hospital?
  • Does the victim need the skills or equipment of
    paramedics or EMTs?
  • Would distance or traffic conditions cause a
delay in getting to the hospital?

28
Signs of Cardiac Arrest
  • Unresponsive
  • Not breathing
  • No pulse

29
Priorities and the AED
  • A Airway
  • B Breathing
  • C Circulation
  • D Defibrillation

30
Special Considerations
  • Is victim lying in water?
  • Is victim less than 8 years old?
  • Is victim wearing a transdermal medication patch
    on his or her chest?
  • Does victim have a pacemaker or an implanted
    defibrillator?

31
Operation of AED
  • POWER ON the AED
  • ATTACH pads
  • ANALYZE rhythm
  • SHOCK (if advised)

32
Electrode Pad Placement
  • Right electrode pad
  • To the right of the breastbone
  • Below the collarboneabove the right nipple
  • Left electrode pad
  • Outside the left nipple, upper edge of the pad
several inches below the left armpit

33
Effective Adherence of Pads
  • Sweaty chest
  • Dry with a towel
  • Do not use alcohol
  • Hairy chest
  • Shaving may be needed

34
AED Safety
