Title: The Pythagorean Theorem

1
The Pythagorean Theorem
  • a2 b2 c2

2
Background information on the Pythagorean Theorem
  • one of the earliest theorems known to ancient
    civilizations
  • Comes from the great philosopher, Pythagoras

3
Cont of Background Information
  • most famous mathematical contribution
  • Pythagoras founded the Pythagorean School of
    Mathematics in Cortona

4
What is the Pythagorean Theorem
  • The Pythagorean Theorem is a statement about
    triangles containing a right angle
  • The theorem states "The area of the square
built upon the hypotenuse of a right triangle is
equal to the sum of the areas of the squares upon
    the remaining sides."

5
An Example!
  • using this right triangle with sides of 5 and 12
cm, and a hypotenuse of 13 cm. We can verify that
the Pythagorean Theorem is true by substituting
    in the values.

6
Other uses of the Theorem
  • You can use the theorem to verify whether or not
a triangle is a right triangle.
  • You can use it to find the missing measures of
    sides

7
Cont. Of Other Uses
  • First you Substitute the values into the formula.
Then find c squared is equal to 400. To find c,
we take the square root of 400, which is 20. This
is the value we're looking for, the missing
    measure of the leg.

8
Why Use the Pythagorean Theorem?
  • If you like math and will continue in doing math
in the future you will use this theorem in every
    math activity.
  • Once you learn it you will be able to apply the
theorem to many other more difficult math
    problems.
