5
Working Groups
  • Goals of this meeting
  • Define role of working groups in LIST structure
  • Determine number and character of working groups
  • Define mode of operation of working groups
  • E.g. subgroups, etc.
  • Membership?
  • Co-chairs?
  • Selection of members
  • Near-term schedule
  • Steps to constitute groups
  • First meetings

6
Working Groups Possible Approach
  • Define broad working groups which span most
    scientific and technical areas
  • Examples
  • Sensitivity Sources
  • Mission Architecture?
  • Interferometry, Lasers Optics
  • Disturbance Sensors Drag-free Control
  • Science Operations
  • In-flight calibration, data reduction and
    processing
  • Calibration Test
  • On-ground IT
  • Integrated Modeling
  • Permanent or core members are designated from
    both Europe and US
  • Co-chairs from Europe and US
  • Core members set agenda of working group, create
    subgroups for specific well-defined tasks
  • Subgroups consist of scientists, engineers, other
    project personnel as appropriate

7
Working Groups Possible Approach (2)
  • Purpose of working groups is twofold
  • Support the LIST in carrying out its
    responsibility to make sound scientific
    recommendations for LISA
  • Working groups report formally through their
    chair(s) to the LIST
  • Support the Project by carrying out specific
scientific and technical studies on topics of
    importance to LISA
  • Advise project on various topics
  • Sub-groups include Project personnel when
    appropriate to enhance information exchange
  • One of the goals of the working groups is to
promote exchange of information between engineers
    and scientists
  • Note recent successful scientist/engineer
    workshop in US

8
Working Groups
  • Questions
  • Should working groups be joint, parallel,
    separate?
  • How are core members supported?
  • How are sub-group members supported?
  • Who chooses working group chairs?

9
LIST List Near-term Action Items
