Title: Pleasures vary in duration, intensity, fecundity, purity, and locality'

1
  • Pleasures vary in duration, intensity, fecundity,
    purity, and locality.
  • Longer pleasures are better than shorter ones
  • Pure pleasures are better than ones mixed with
    pain.
  • Pleasures productive of more pleasures are better
    than pleasures productive of pain.
  • Overall pleasure (sense of well being) is better
than merely local organ pleasure of taste buds or
    sex organs.
  • Mental pleasures of reading are better than
physical pleasures of spills and thrills.
  • Quiet pleasures of old age are better than stormy
    pleasures of youth (Epicurus).

2
  • Psychological hedonism is not ethical hedonism.
  • But if psychological hedonism is true ethical
    hedonism is also true
  • I cannot pursue anything but pleasure implies
that it is false that I should pursue anything
    but pleasure.
  • Hedonism is either universalistic hedonism
    egoistic hedonism.

3
  • Even if the attainment of every goal is
accompanied by pleasure, that does prove that the
goal was pursued for the sake of pleasure.
  • Even if pleasure is the standard of right action,
that does not prove that pleasure should be the
    end in view.
  • The hedonistic paradox to pursue the pleasure of
listening to music as the end in view is to cut
oneself off form the source of such pleasure,
    from the music itself.
  • It is not the contemplation of pleasureful
listening that is the source of pleasure. It is
    the music itself.

4
  • An action is morally right because it produces
pleasure only if rational discussion regulated by
universal rights agrees that pleasure is the
    standard.
  • People who believe that doing ones moral duty is
sometimes right even if it produces pain cannot
    be disqualified from the discussion.
  • Therefore, the standard of pleasure is not
ultimate, but is subordinate to the standard of
    rational discussion.
  • Otherwise the pursuit of pleasure is not an
ism. It is not hedonism. It is an animal
impulse and not a defensible human belief.
